P330 Tower adding M.2 drives

2019-09-16, 15:34 PM

My P330/9900 Tower w/ Nvidia Quadro 4000 is due arrive tomorrow.

It will come an M.2 bootdrive.

I'd like to add 2 M.2 drives, is this possible and will their size be limited to 1TB?

Yes, you can certainly add a 2nd M.2 drive into the P330 Tower system assuming you have an available PCIe slot. If you only have an Nvidia Quadro 4000 card installed in the system, then you'll likely be able to install a second M.2 adapter into the 3rd PCIe slot using an M.2 PCIe carrier card (FRU P/N: 01AJ832). Make sure you plug the 2nd M.2 adapter into PCIe Slot 3 as that's a PCIe x4 whereas PCIe Slot 2 is a PCIe x1 slot and would force the M.2 adapter to run at reduced bandwidth.

Also, there shouldn't be a limit to the M.2 capacity that'll work.  The highest capacity M.2 drive that we looked at in the lab in the P330 Tower is a 2TB NVMe drive.

Thanks for your prompt response!

I'm glad to hear 2TB drive is supported.

Are there any avenues for a third M.2?

Well, this isn't something that we have actively looked at but my thinking is that this will likely work if you had an extra available PCIe x4 slot. Unfortunately, the only other slot available in your current setup would be a PCIe x1 slot. Though this will likely recognize the drive in the system, this is definitely not something I would recommend.

The other option would be to remove the Nvidia GPU and use the PCIe x16 slot. This would force you to use the integrated graphics.

Just want to see if you were able to add the 2tb drive?  I am looking to pick up a p330 tower but Lenovo will only put in a 1TB SSD - I hope that I could upgrade it myself after purchase with a 2TB.

Are you referring to a 2TB NVMe SSD or a 2TB SATA (2.5") SSD? Either one of these drives should work in the P330 Tower.

Thank you for getting back to me.  Either one - I would prefer to put in a M.2 drive since it's faster but I could do a 2tb sata (2.5") ssd  if I had to.

Does anyone know why the specs for a P330 tower states that a ssd (m.2 or sata) will max out at 1tb (and a spin drive at 4tb)?  Seems awfully small amount of storage space for a workstation, even at the low end.

What Lenovo officially supports after compatibility testing and what a given hardware will support are often very different. There should be no limitation on sizes versus what is publicly available right now, but with any luck someone on here has already upgraded their system and can give some personal experience examples.
