P520 does not boot : 3 long beeps followed by continous single short beeps

2021-07-21, 10:07 AM

P520 does not boot/nothing on screen

When powered on, 3 long beeps followed by continuous single short beeps

Or it could be 3 beeps (with no pause) followed by continuous single beeps (with pause in between).  The first 3 beeps don't sound like long beep (as with the memory not detected).

Troubleshooting completed

- removed and graphics card, memory modules, disconnected all sata devices except onboard M2 drive

-removing memory modules changes tone to "3 short beeps followed by 1 long beep" indicative of "Memory not detected."

-green light on power supply always

-tried clearing CMOS

-PS2 keyboard installed as well as wireless dongle for keyboard/mouse

Seems the issue happens after POST check on memory

Any ideas what the fault could be or

Any other steps I could try

P520 does not boot : 3 long beeps followed by continous single short beeps

**bleep**, I posted a while ago with the same issue as you but with a P510. I've tried everything same as you and no luck. Recently I've tried doing a BIOS recovery through a burned CD of the firmware ISO, and it doesn't seem to complete. I see the optical drive (connected through USB3.0) spin up and read, but then it stops and does not proceed. The machine never powers off, so I assume it couldn't proceed with the flash. Following your thread to see if anyone has any more ideas.

Any chance you could post a video (with audio) of the beep sequence you're hearing?  Might help in trying to figure out the best direction to go with debugging the issue.

Ahh, that's different than my issue.  Perhaps I'll post a new thread with a video of my issue so I don't pollute your thread.

Good luck!

Sorry for the delayed response to your previous post.  I must have missed this update.

Honestly, that video helps to clarify the beep sequence, but it really isn't triggering anything for me as I don't think I've encountered that before (which is saying something).

Can you provide your full system configuration?  Maybe there's something there that will be a clue.  Please include the slot location for any installed cards, as well as what your current BIOS level is (if you know it....obviously tough if the system is not booting).

Your barebones approach is a good one.  You've confirmed that BIOS is at least up and running by pulling all the memory and getting the expected error beep sequence.  I'd probably recommend something along the lines of trying to boot with a single DIMM and single GPU installed to the primary graphics slot (in P520's case, that is slot 2).

Any detail on what might have happened to the system leading up to this symptom?  Any HW changes made or any SW updates/changes applied?

No hardware changes. There was an optional firmware update on Microsoft Update that I installed.

This was the order of events.

Old BIOS/TPM 1.2 - original configuration

Upgraded BIOS to latest (as of 7/2021)

Upgraded TPM to 2.0 from 1.2

Installed Windows Update firmware update

After rebooting from firmware update, the machine was dead

Tested with different GPUs in slot 2 and different RAM configurations.

The next step I'd like to do is to flash the BIOS directly, but without a warranty I suspect I may have to recycle the device.

P520 has always been TPM2.0.  So I'm confused by your statement regarding the TPM1.2 to TPM2.0 upgrade, and even more curious about what tool you might have tried to use to accomplish that.

I think a BIOS recovery might be the best option here assuming your system is no longer booting.  Typically this involves moving the clear CMOS jumper, and then booting the system with a viable BIOS recovery media (CD/USB) present.  More detail on that process can be found in the User Guide.

Note - You could also just try the clear CMOS procedure first to see if by chance it will restore your system to a bootable state.  If that fails, then maybe move on to the BIOS recovery process.
