Re:P620 Bios Update Issue

2021-09-14, 18:30 PM

@GMP620 Agreed. I was also thinking that recovery BIOS might not be corrupted when I saw the "scary" message. It could be just something else related to recovery BIOS.

It was also possible that I already had a "some corrupted" recovery BIOS which only got reported by after the BIOS update failure.

As a system level programmer, I am interested in finding the root cause. But as a consumer, I think Lenovo was wrong and I hope they could admit it.

Re:P620 Bios Update Issue

2021-09-14, 20:04 PM

Sorry for jumping into this thread late as I was out on vacation last week.

Still trying to get caught up on things, but from what I understand there was an issue discovered in BIOS 22A, and that release has now been pulled from the web.  The BIOS team is actively working to resolve the issue and we hope to have it fixed for the next BIOS release.

I'm trying to see if there was an official support tip released on this problem or not by the service team.  From what I understand so far, the workaround procedure provided previously (move JP55 to pins 2-3, reflash BIOS, then replace JP55 back to normal position of pins 1-2) should resolve the error message about the corrupt recovery BIOS image.

From what I understand, not all users attempting to flash to BIOS 22A will encounter this problem.

We'll post more info here when it's available to try to keep you updated on progress on this issue.

If we've helped resolve your issue, please be sure to mark your topic as solved!

A BIOS update hit LVFS, still didn't fix the issue, I might try it again when the ISO drops on the website likely moving JP55 to 2-3 pins unless that isn't advisable with that update.

@dbrandon

I downloaded the v1.35 .cab file from LVFS.

Did a successful firmware update from S07KT22A to S07KT23A using Windows 10 UEFI Firmware update procedure.

JP55 was on 2-3 (Recovery BIOS - write enabled)

LVFS information:

Lenovo-Think-P620-System-Firmware-S07KT23A.cab
Description
This stable release fixes the following issues:

Enhanced the BIOS Setup Layout support.
Enhanced the Boot Block recovery support.
Fixed the issue that M.2 Drive of Main Menu device name string exchange when NVMe RAID is enabled.
Fixed the issue that "Backup SPI image corruption ... ..." warning message pops up during POST after flash BIOS from S07KT21A to upgrade.
Fixed the issue that LVFS update error.

I am not able to update to S07KT23A. Computer just reboots, black screen until Windows Logon, and still on the old version then (S07KT22A).

BIOS version does not show in device manager either.

Using the .cab file the system reboots and then freezes (numlock does not toggle anymore).

When I turn it off after ~20min and turn it on again it boots to Windows (nothing on the screen before Windows login screen).

Now I have P620 System Firmware 1.0.0.35 with yellow exlamation mark in device manager (Code 14). UEFI is still on S07KT22A.

This device cannot work properly until you have restarted your computer. (Code 14)

Click Restart Computer to restart your computer.

Firmware is pending update on next system reboot.

Pending Firmware Version: 10023

Firmware failed to update during the last attempt.

Last Attempt Version: 10023
Last Attempt Date: 30/09/2021 12:26:12
Last Attempt Status: 0xC0000058

Downloaded the firmware S07KT23A update packages from the Lenovo support site.

I do not see the jumper JP55 mentioned in any of the packages installation instructions.

I would not worry about the exclamation mark. As you probably already know, it is not a driver needed by the OS.

It is there to provide firmware updates via Windows update, when enabled in the P620 settings.

In the past the updates where offered to my system as an optional update in Windows 10 update.

But the Microsoft update-catalog Microsoft Update-catalogus seems not up to date at this moment as Firmware 1.0.0.31 (S07KT1FA) is the last available firmware shown.

If you where to disable Windows UEFI update in the firmware settings, it would disable and hide in the device manager.

(But then the Firmware update from OS would also no longer work)

You should also be able to get rid of it if you want.

Since S07KT22A I don't get any video output before Windows Login screen and I am not able to enter the BIOS anymore...

And Update to S07KT23A fails.

Re:P620 Bios Update Issue

2021-09-30, 14:18 PM

I'm on Fedora 34 and this morning I ran a system firmware update from 1.33 to 1.35 via Software Center. Shortly after the PC rebooted and I saw the text that the update is being applied the PC shut down (voluntarily, no power loss or anything). After that I started seeing the message during POST about corrupted recovery BIOS. The PC still boots and I still see a notification to update from 1.33 to 1.35, but repeating the update doesn't help - PC still shuts down during the update.

I guess the irony is that this firmware update actually introduced the issue that it claimed to have fixed :/
