P620 - Front Panel USB Indicator LEDs

2021-04-06, 16:34 PM

I recently received my new P620 Thinkstation. The front panel has four USB ports. Each USB port has an indicator LED next to it. When my P620 is powered on, the indicator LED for the first USB port never lights up. The indicator LEDs for the other three USB ports do light up as shown in the pic below.

The first USB port otherwise appears to function normally - a flash drive seemed to work fine. According to the Lenovo manual the first USB port supports USB 3.2 Gen2 with charging.

Why doesn't the indicator LED for the first USB port ever light up? Is the front panel on my P620 defective?

Congratulations on your new P620 ThinkStation.

What SIO firmware is on your P620 system? The version can be found in BIOS F1 setup -> Main screen -> Under "Embedded Controller Version".  It should read something like "S07ESxxA", where "xx" is the version number.

If it's not at S07ES12A, can you please try updating this firmware using the flash utility from the Lenovo P620 support site and let us know if this resolves your issue?

Hello.

Congrats on the P620! I am over the moon with mine!

The lights on mine are all working and have been so since I fired it up for the first time.

All the best from Iceland!

The indicator light for the first USB port on the front panel of my P620 still doesn't light up after the firmware update. What do you advise?

I haven't pulled out the I/O cage in my machine, so I don't know if the LED can be easily fixed.

But it's only a 2 step process to pull it out so getting a replacement I/O cage would be my suggestion.

All the best!

Thanks for your input. Could someone from Lenovo Staff still advise on the next steps? The SIO firmware update to version S07ES12A didn't fix the issue.

Hold on while I check this with the internal Lenovo team.

I kind of agree with AtliJarl.  The front I/O on P620 is driven through a separate PCB that connects back to the motherboard.  I would suggest attempting to reinsert that front I/O cage to see if that helps.  There's a small lever on the rear of the I/O assembly (inside the system) that you would lift up, and the you can push that assembly out of the system from inside.  Just be cautious as it can sometime eject with some force due to the friction fit PCB connector.  To reinstall, just reinsert that assembly and make sure it mates with the connector again.

That would be a solid first debug step.

Reinserting the front I/O on my P620 didn't fix the issue. Nor did the SIO firmware update to version S07ES12A. My P620 is brand new. Is this issue best handled as warranty service request?

You might want to call into Lenovo Support and get a support ticket opened for this.  I would think this should be handed as a warranty service request.
