P620 Speaker popping interference

2021-04-17, 3:45 AM

I have a new P620 with an audio problem right out of the box unfortunately. I have set of speakers attached to a Dell monitor connected to the rear audio out jack with a 3.5mm stereo plug. This setup worked fine with my old workstation. This one however has a persistent but only occasional pop coming from the speakers. I have updated all drivers I could find, and Windows is fully updated. I cannot be 100% sure but it appears that the pops coincide with the fan(s) stepping.

Is this a common problem? Is there perhaps a motherboard fault that is causing cross-interference? The speakers play audio fine generally, just they keep popping at random intervals and it is most noticeable when nothing else is playing. Another peculiarity is in my CAD package where operational feedback noises don't always play on the first mouse click due to a pop usually coinciding with the first action - I wonder if this could be triggering a fan boost thereby causing a pop?

I have had no issues with mine connected to a decent quality stereo receiver.

In the past, with other workstations, any problem with popping and whining was almost always cables/connectors.    Even if they work well in one machine.    The common thin ones don’t shield well.

I looked for a well insulated one and I’ve been using the same Monster cable for years now.     The type/brands musicians use to connect their electronic bits together would work best.   If that doesn’t work, you can be more sure you have a problem with your sound card/motherboard.

Hello,

This is the first instance I am aware of with someone reporting such an issue. Are the drivers up to date?

As was previously noted, it could very well be cable issues. Do you have any other speakers, speaker cables, or maybe a headset you can plug into the same port to test the sound?

It would be easier if the speaker cable wasn't permanently wired into the speaker, so I am stuck with the cable & connector. They worked without issue on my previous workstation. I have swapped over to using the HDMI audio with the speaker plugged into the monitor output and will see how that goes. I expect this will fix it since I suspect the 3.5mm audio output from the motherboard is the problem. It definitely pops when something changes the load on the system and the fans throttle up or down.

I have the same issue on a brand new P620 with on-board audio. The speakers are Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. Both rear and front audio jacks produce the intermittent popping sound. I also connected to my monitor as a workaround.

All,

I'm experiencing this as well. Super annoying.

I have never listened for correlation with the fan spenning up. I ended up finding a NuForce uDAC add on device that seems to provide isolation and prevent the popping, but I'm not super impressed to have spent $4000 on a computer that has audio popping where I'd never heard one single pop in 10 years on my old HP Workstation. That combined with the Power Supply fan noise coming back doesn't impress me......

I updated all the drivers as well, did not change anything.

After three reports here about this I think it's fair to say there is definitely a problem with the audio on these workstations. Not drivers or users' cables etc. My money is on some kind of shielding issue causing power steps in the fans to interfere with the audio outputs. Mine is working fine now with audio via HDMI out from the graphics card which is a perfectly workable solution, but not one that should have been necessary.

Just checking this forum out for the first time in months.

I too have this speaker popping issue. It's specific to the built in Realtek USB front speaker only.

I have a Soundblaster external card and when I listen through it...audio is fine.

Seems like interference of some kind.

Chiming in - I just received my brand new $6000 P620 and sure enough the internal speaker / "Realtek USB Audio Front" makes periodic popping noises. Very disappointing on such a high end machine. BIOS is fully updated and all drivers are up to date.

Given the number of people reporting this problem, we've re-engaged our extended team to see if they can help dig into these complaints regarding P620 audio noise.

That being said, if anybody is able to capture audio/video of the problem and post it here, that might be beneficial for us.
