P620 Upgrade

2021-04-08, 4:34 AM

Hello, I'm interested in a customized build of P620, but the current wait time for that is longer than 12weeks, which is too long.  So, I'm thinking of purchasing a readily available pre-built P620 (PartNumber 30E1S0FH00) and upgrade parts separately, mainly the following:

1. CPU from 3945WX to 3995WX

2. RAM - 8 x 64GB

3. M.2 Gen4 SSD 2TB

I'd like to get a confirmation on the below two points:

1. if I do this upgrade by myself, the build itself, motherboard, BIOS, etc would be the same as the one I would get via a customized build with the 3995WX CPU and the RAMs?  I'm concerned about any difference in the configuration of P620 with 3945WX vs. 3995WX.

2. Would this affect the warranty any way?

Thanks a lot!

- Yes, as long as you're comfortable with being inside the system, I don't see any immediate issues with you performing the upgrade yourself.  Yes, the motherboard, BIOS, etc should be the same as the you would get via a customized build with the 3995WX CPU and Memory.  In fact, we do have a whitepaper we put together that explains how to replace CPU's in the P620 platform.

2. Would this affect the warranty any way?

- No, as long as you're swapping for Lenovo qualified parts, I don't believe this will void the warranty.

Thanks a lot for the clarifications.  It's great to have the manual on how to replace CPUs.

For the qualified Lenovo parts, is there a list for the qualified parts?  I'm looking to upgrade not only CPU, but also Memory, N.2 nvme SSD and HDD drives.

Thanks a lot!
