Re:P620 - problems after installing BIOS S07KT22A

2021-10-04, 20:55 PM

One thing I might would recommend is doing a BIOS boot block recovery on the P620 to get back to BIOS S07KT1FA.  Then, flashing directly up to BIOS S07KT23A.

Here are some quick steps:

1. Download the S07KT1FA BIOS ISO file.

2. Extract the ISO to a FAT32 USB memory key.

3. Insert the USB memory key into one of the rear USB ports on the P620 system.

4. Unplug AC power.

5. Move the clear CMOS jumper (J58) from pins 1-2 to 2-3.  This can be found directly above the PSU in the system.

6. Plug AC power and power on the system. You should here 2-short beeps followed by the system reading the USB memory key.  With a monitor plugged in, you should see a BIOS setup update screen.  When this finishes, the system should automatically power off.

7. Unplug AC power.

8. Move the clear CMOS jumper (J58) back to the original position (pins 1-2).

9. Plug AC power and power on the system.  You'll likely get a BIOS post error code about "Setup data integrity error". Press F1 to enter BIOS setup, F9 to load BIOS defaults, and F10 to Save and Exit.

10. Once this completes and everything seems back to normal, feel free to attempt to flash up to the latest BIOS level S07KT23A

@mebsterbball didn't had a chance to try to BIOS recovery. Mainboard was replaced by a local lenovo service partner and accessing the BIOS and video output on post works again.

BIOS-Version/-Date from the replacement board is:   LENOVO S07KT1FA, 19.05.2021

Not sure if I should risk updating to the latest one again...

I just checked this on my P620 system with BIOS S07KT1FA and it seems to update to BIOS S07KT23A without any issues.

@Maria_vW   - Since you've already had your P620 motherboard replaced and appear to be back to a fully functional state, I would probably recommend holding off on updating system BIOS in your case in the near term.  Although @mebsterbball has checked this on a P620 (going from 1FA to 23A) and found that it works OK, we've also not readily reproduced the no-video issue you were seeing with your system previously.  I think in your case, it might be better to wait a bit while we continue to work with the BIOS team to understand what's causing the no-video symptom you were seeing.

On that note, that (no video output) issue is currently being worked.  We're still trying to get our arms around that problem, but my personal opinion is that it is not related to the backup SPI error message seen with BIOS updates 21A/22A that was prevalent in that other thread.  I think it's a unique issue that happened to show up around the same time as the other one, but they likely have different specific causes.  We'll post here with more info when we get it.
