P700: Memory load order for Dual Processor Configuration

2017-09-04, 5:12 AM

Hello,

I want to upgrade my P700 Thinkstation from one processor to two processors. At the moment I use 4 16GB DDR4 memory modules. How would I have to rearrange the memory modules, when I use 2 processors and do I have to upgrade to 8 16 GB bars for better performance? Couldn't find any specifications from Lenovo, yet.

Thanks for the help!

First of all, welcome to the forum.

Regarding your memory performance question, this whitepaper has a few examples of module size vs. quantity benchmark results: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/next_gen_memory_configurator_v1.1.pdf

If this were my system, I would simply install your current 4 modules as 2 per CPU and not worry about performance. Unless you need more memory there's no sense in purchasing more just for a minimal gain in speed. It's truly minimal.

See page 135 of the document below for information on memory configurations for you system.

Per the manual, you would have to split the current RAM between both CPUs (or acquire more) and install them in the correct order..

Thank you for the quick reply.

So it doesn't matter weather I have two, four or six 16GB memory moduels per processor?

I know from other manufactures, that it's for example better to use four 16GB modules per processor than two 32GB modules.
