P720 - can it support more than 2TB using the onboard 2 slots M.2 NVMe?

2020-05-23, 0:53 AM

The specs for P720 seems to indicate that the maximum storage for the two onboard M.2 NVMe is 2TB. https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/think-workstations/thinkstation-p-series-towers/ThinkStation-P720/p/33TS3TPP720

Can I use two 2TB Samsung 970 EVO sticks in the two onboard M.2 NVMe slots to make up a total of 4TB of storage?

Per the Psref for that model you should be OK as long as you do not exceed 38.96TB in total SSD storage,

Thanks Legions, I tend to agree with you but it it would not be prudent of me to ignore the Specs which state: Max Storage Up to 12 total drives Up to 4 internal storage bays Max onboard M.2 = 2 (2 TB) Max 3.5" HDD = 6 (60 TB) Max 2.5" SSD = 10 (20 TB)

Thanks JDGillis, would love to have someone from Lenovo to confirm that the specs listed in https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/think-workstations/thinkstation-p-series-towers/ThinkStation-P720/p/33TS3TPP720 is incorrect though.

I can confirm that the specs listed on the online configurator are not correct (or at least no longer correct).  2TB M.2 NVMe drives are fully supported on P720.  However, we do not officially support the drive originally mentioned in this thread (Samsung 970 EVO) as it is a consumer grade drive.  We support the PM981, which is very similar.

Installing two of those drives in your P720 shouldn't be a problem, though not officially supported.  Just keep in mind that if you intend to utilize any sort of RAID with those drives, you'd want to also select the appropriate Intel VROC controller if you don't already have one.
