Re:Rattling sound in P620

2021-03-17, 15:17 PM

Dear Psuturtle,

On March 12 I have placed an FRU order for the above-mentioned issue. After sending to the engineers a video recording (as requested) of the issue, I received today the new PSU. During all the communication I have mentioned the issue and your post about the new updated PSU that should not have the noise issue.

Unfortunately, the replacement unit has an even worse rattling.

How and who should I contact at Lenovo France to be sure that I will be in the queue for new PSU?

Here is the serial number of the PSU received today. I see that is the Revision: A. Is this from the batch with updated PSU?

Thank you in advance!

@Adrian_Hancu - You'll need to contact support directly for more information on this.  Unfortunately I do not yet have details as to how that team is handling the sorting/screening of FRU power supplies in the various FRU warehouses.

@Adrian_Hancu All my power supplies in hand are identical as yours. All three, the one that originally came in my station, the first replacement, and the most recent rattle free replacement. All same exact Lenovo P/N, same Rev: A, same Model.

As we all know of course, the initial rattle free sound is not a guarantee of years of rattle free service, but, it's a good start.

Anyway for those that kind of want to do more self-investigating, I took one of my supplies apart, found that this is the fan contained within:

Foxconn PIA092K12L

See Pages 45 and 55 of this PDF, attached here for ease: http://szhotway.com/fan.pdf

Once again, I cannot stress enough that customers should not attempt to disassemble their power supply.

This can be a dangerous procedure if you don't know what you're doing, and could result in serious injury.  Power supplies in ThinkStation systems are not considered serviceable parts.  I don't know for certain, but I could also see a possibility that the service team could deny warranty support if they determine that the PSU has been opened or tampered with.  Work with the service team to get this issue addressed and resolved.

I couldn't agree more that it could result in serious injury. As a practicing electrical engineer I had the comfort to take this on without much worry. I often deal with high voltage equipment (ie. >>15 kV)

From Lenovo's standpoint for sure playing in there could void warranty. The one I took apart was the garbage one I took out from the first warranty replacement. It's basically trash as it's not a returnable item.

Anyway it's basically impossible not to pursue the curiosity of what could be wrong and how to fix it after spending this kind of money on the station... But I don't blame Lenovo for making it clear it is absolutely not recommended.

Thanks again for the support!

After a few months my power supply has begun to start the rattling again, ever so slightly. Has there been any developments or changes on this PSU subject?

I'd had to get a third one and have persistent issues.

I would suggest contacting service to have this issue resolved.  The original problem has been root caused and resolved though an update implemented with the power supply vendor.  There was a period of time where stock was being flushed (both new production and FRU), but I think that should have fully timed out by now.  Service should be able to help resolve this if you're still seeing issues.

@Psuturtle,

Quote:"Sounds silly, but getting your ear close to the system is the best way to start narrowing that down to at least a local region within the box."

Does not sound silly at all to me. We used this trick all the time already 40 years ago.

We used a screwdriver and carefully put the metal tip to a device housing , while laying your ear against the hard plastic isolated grip.

It amplifies the sound and the srcrewdriver also keeps you isolated and at a save distance from the electronic device.
