Re: P320SFF

2018-03-08, 15:38 PM

I have some additional information on the Windows 10 (pro) for Workstations question.  Starting in October 2017, OEMs (such as Lenovo) were forced to install Win10 Pro for Workstations on any system shipping with Xeon (and Opteron, but that doesn't apply here).  To support that initiative, we starting injecting a DPK into the system that would allow Win10 Pro for Workstation to activate.

(psuturtle edit - refined some of the comments below from the original post)

If your system was built in October 2017 or later, it will have the DPK necessary to allow W10PFW to install/activate.  This is included as part of the Fall Creators Update (or RS3).  Obviously systems built with RS3 from factory will also have all the W10PFW feature set as well, along with the necessary DPK to support it.

For those wishing to update to W10PFW that do not have the DPK installed, it would have to be a purchased upgrade through the MS store...those features will not automatically come with the RS3/Fall Creators Update.

However, as I mentioned, in the case of P320, you really won't be able to take advantage of the key W10PFW features aside from maybe the resiliant file system (ReFS) update.  The other updates all require/depend on HW that is not supported in the P320 platform.  More info about W10PFW here.

Thanks for the extra info @psturtle I guess I am just one of the users that like to be running the specific OS build (and be on the same build as my studio partner haha)

In regards to my specific useage for the SATA power connectors- I want to use 2x SSD using a thirdparty standard 2x 2.5" SSD to 3,5" tray... so my P320SFF system would have 4 total SSD HDDs installed (3x SSDs internally and 1x SSD in the front HDD enclosure).

I figured that heatwise and powerwise this should not be an issue but want to know the FRU that has 3 or 4 SATA Power connectors on the one cable (as is possibly used in the larger P towers?)

Does that sound feasible? Thanks :)

Do you have a link to the 3rd party device you're intending to use?

If I'm understanding things correctly, you're just trying to get/add another SATA power drop for another device.  It might be easier and cheaper to simply use a SATA power splitter like this one.  The SATA power cables designed for P320 SFF are rather purpose-built for the configs we support, so I'm worried that even if you get the cable we support, it might not meet your needs.

So I,m guessing there is no way of installing two 3.5 Hard drives if I already have the optical drive installed?

I don't think there's any officially supported way to do what you're trying to do.

That being said, there's a possibility you could make this work using this enclosure, which would allow you to install a slim ODD and 3.5"/2.5" HDD in the standard ODD bay.

That enclosure will come with the necessary dual drop SATA power cable that would be used to drive both devices (HDD + slim ODD) in the enclosure.  You'd need a total of 2 pieces of FRU 54Y9377 which are SATA data cables long enough to reach the SATA ports on the board.  The fan cable should plug directly to an existing 4-pin header on the board (one pin left exposed, which should be an unneeded PWM pin).

Then you'd just need to pick the slim (9.0mm) ODD of your choice.  If you let me know which type of ODD you would need, I can track down a FRU/Option PN for you.

Again, this isn't fully supported.  I'm not sure why it wasn't off the top of my head, but physically you could make it work with these parts.

@psuturtle Thx for the info, although it has almost been 12 months I still have not upgraded yet as I have been patiently watching the prices of SSDs drop in price (luckily)... so almost ready to do the afore mentioned upgrades... although I am unsure if I will go ahead with installing a 4x PCI-e USB 3.1 Gen2 card for my external drive caddy.

But I digress,  my reason for revisiting my thread is that sinnce purchasing and through useage I have benn encountering ALOT of GFX card memory leaks and crashes (despite updating drivers / Adobe spftware etc)... I wondered if any of the BIOS updates etc that are available on the support site may point to fixing possible GFX instability isuues etc (Quadro P1000)?

I have not updated any BIOS / UEFI related or Firmware or System since initial purchase.

What are your thoughts or reccomendations please?

Updated BIOS to latest. All working fine.

I would like to upgrade my RAM:

Could I please get some help as to my options please?

Currently have 2x16GB ECC but would consider all options to get to MAX memory population even if I need to get all new modules (I can sell my 16GB ECC to my housemate who has same system / config)

Thanks!

Re:ThinkStation P320 SFF - additional drive install (SSD, HDD, kit, bracket, cables, enclosure)

2020-08-29, 11:13 AM

Hey guys hope all safe!

I tried to extend my warranty before it expired but there were some website issues and then it said I was unable to extend because it had expired.

I submitted a support ticket to explain the various personal circumstances with family tradgedy etc now the ticket says resolved but I haven’t recieved any correspondance.

I thought there would have been some reminders via email or the support software etc but unfortunately I did not recieve anything.

Is there anything possible to help as I am still studying and would like to make sure my machine is protected during the further time.

Thanks for any help in advance, I have a support ticket (now closed) but I am unsure of the outcome- wether there is some possible leniency during this erratic time.

Kind regards,

Adam
