ThinkStation S30 0569 With error B9 on motherboard

2018-12-22, 18:31 PM

Very good day dear,

A few days ago I have a ThinkStation S30 and I upgraded the CPU from E5 2609 to E5 2690, everything was fine but at some point I wanted to update my video card to one that had "R9 270X" saved, as it did not give video. try to update the BIOS with the utility that is on the page that allows updating from Windows, the machine continued working without problems, but after I turned it off the next day did not start, look at the MotherBoard and I realized that it gives an error in the LEDs . indicates "b9".

I indicate everything you try:

1) I removed the memory modules and only left 1 (I was trying slot by slot) but it did not work. "The memories are Non ECC". Even so, before it worked.

2) Remove the battery from the Bios and leave the PC disconnected from the electrical network all night, then connect and put the battery but it remains the same.

3) Change the Jumper to refresh the bios, change it from position 1-2 to 2-3, turn on the PC, and keep on giving the same "b9" so I returned the jumper to its position (1-2).

4) Download the last Bios Rom from the page and put the ROM file in a pendriver formatted with FAT32, then place the jumper in 2-3 connect the pendriver in the internal USB port of the board and turn on the PC to try to flash new, but still giving the "b9". and it does not give video.

I run out of ideas and for more that I look so much in the Spanish forum, this, and on the page I do not get the meaning of this message on the board.

Although the memories were Non ECC, previously it worked without problems. I already appreciate your help.

A couple of questions to try to help figure out what's going on....

1.  Do you know what BIOS level was installed on the system prior to the attempt to update it?

2.  Do you happen to have any ECC memory to try in the system?

3.  Do you have a pic of the LEDs on the board just so we can verify the code being shown?

S30 doesn't support non-ECC memory.  I know you mentioned that it was previously working with non-ECC memory.  That could be the case, but it could also easily be the case that the BIOS update you installed included updated MRC code that somehow shut that down from working.

It sounds to me like your system is getting hung up in BIOS, possibly while the MRC is trying to execute (which makes sense given the non-supported DIMMs).

Hello, I finally solved the problem.

The truth is I'm not sure why the flash did not work with a USB 3.0 pendriver. Probe von an old pendriver 1.0 of 4Gb and it worked, I made it downgrade to the bios.

Finally the plate came back to work with the R9 270X and "NO ECC" memories. (Although I plan to buy 8 DDR3 4GB Registered ECC memories).

The problem was the last update of the bios available on the page, (A0KT61A That version killed my motherboard).

Lastly, ¿does anyone have a user manual for the Socrates Rev1.0 board?

This helped me too

Glad you're back up and running.  Out of curiosity, what vesion of BIOS did you downgrade to?  I might be able to go back and check some of the BIOS update logs to see if something was changed/updated that might have caused the issue.
