Thinkstation P520 RAM Upgrade: RDIMM or DIMM ?

2020-06-05, 14:58 PM

Dear All,

I have a P520 workstation configured with 4x8 GB DDR4 2666MHz ECC RDIMM 4. Looking how to increase the RAM, as I need at least 64 GB but possibly 96 or 128 GB.

I have checked the memory configurator https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/thinkstation_p520_p520c_memory_configurations_v1.0.pdf but could not understand whether the new module I am looking for HAS to be RDIMM, or any other type of DDR4 DIMM can fit? If others can fit, would RDIMM ensure anyway a much better performance? What configuration do you recommend, two modules of 32GB extra + 4x8 GB, or one module of 64GB extra + 4 x 8 GB?

Thank you in advance

Marco

Let me try to answer some of your questions:

I have a P520 workstation configured with 4x8 GB DDR4 2666MHz ECC RDIMM 4. Looking how to increase the RAM, as I need at least 64 GB but possibly 96 or 128 GB.

  • This is possible.  8x 16GB DDR4 ECC RDIMMs can get you to 128GB memory.

  • The memory configurator is really the best place to start.  In the P520, we only support RDIMM's.  In fact, I don't think UDIMMs will even boot in the P520 platform as I think I've tried this in the lab before.  As mentioned in the memory configurator whitepaper you referenced to, Lenovo recommends filling DIMM slots in multiples of 4 or 8 DIMMs to fully take advantage of all 4 memory channels for best memory bandwidth performance.

Would this RAM be compatible (even if capped to a speed of 2666mhz) with this machine?

Yes, this ECC RDIMM should work.

Though this isn't a supported vendor, this should work in your P520 just going off of specs. Keep in mind, the memory will be clocked down based on the CPU memory bandwidth specs. I believe in this case, they'll be clocked down to 2666MHz.
