Thinkstation e30 7824 error beeps, no visual output to monitor

2018-01-12, 14:34 PM

I was given this thinkstation and have been trying to get it to work but all I am recieving are 2 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps.  There was no graphics card in it when I recieved it and from doing research I found the following two previous forum posts that were similar;

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation-Workstations/P900-starts-with-beeps-2-long-3-short/td-p/3371650

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCentre-A-E-M-S-Series/M900x-amp-Tiny-Recover-from-failed-BIOS-update-CMOS-jumper/td-p/3509165/page/3

The only connection I have video set up to on the board is via the VGA port on the mother board but I cannot ever get a BIOS screen to appear. I believe I found the CMOS jumper and moved the connector from the two pins it was on out of three to the last two. When I did this I recieved the 2 short beeps codes which indicate a failure during post. I moved the jumper back to the original position but now I recieve 2 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps then folllowed by 2 even faster beeps.

I have no Idea what to do and am wondering if it is now just a bricked board since I no longer have the original grahpics card. I also have no idea what the new set of beeps mean! ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

A few questions to clear up on the HW configuration:

- What CPU are you using?

- Is there any discrete GPU installed in the system?

The beep code you're describing (2 long, 3 short, 2 short higher pitched) is actually a combination of two different errors.  The 2 long + 3 short is an error indicating that BIOS cannot find a suitable video OPROM to load, and the last 2 higher pitched beeps are indicating a CMOS error (likely no video).

Normally you run into that situation when you have a graphics card that only has a UEFI OPROM on it, but BIOS is on set up to support Legacy OPROMs (or other similar scenarios).  This is essentially the situation described in the thread from your first link.  However, you're running an E-series system that potentially has integrated graphics which is a bit odd.

So let's clarify what CPU you have, if you have a discrete GPU installed, and which specific port(s) you're trying to connect the display(s) to.

Intel Xeon E3-1248 3.38 Ghz CPU on the stock Lenovo IS6XM Rev. 1.0 Mother board. I am using the VGA monitor port on the stock MB . There is no graphics card in stalled, the PCIe bay is empty.  There is a DisplayPort on the board but I have no monitor that supports it or a cable for it.

Have you ever had any luck in getting onboard graphics to work with this CPU installed?

I don't see the E3-1248 v1 (sandy bridge) CPU listed as an officially supported CPU in the documentation, though admittedly documentation for a platform this old is starting te become difficult to track down.  I also don't see the processor listed on Intel's spec site anywhere, which tells me it might be a unique off-roadmap SKU.  Typically, E3 Xeons from this family that have support for integrated graphics end with a "5" (i.e. 1225, 1235, 1245, etc.).

Not every Xeon supported integrated graphics, so if the E3-1248 v1 doesn't have support for that, it would easily explain the symptoms you're seeing.  If that's the case, you'd have to use a discrete graphics card of some sort.

I'll double check with my Intel contacts to see if I can dig up any info on this CPU.

I am uncertain if the onboard graphics ever worked with this CPU. I went and grabbed a bright flashlight and took a second look and the CPU turns out to be a E3-1240 not a E3-1248, the zero has a slight diagonal line through it which I mistook for an 8, my bad.
The system may have had a graphics card in it previously but if so that card was removed before I got ahold of it.  No way for me to find out now saddly.  I couldn't find any documentation about the system save for a few review sights and they only mentioned the basic specs for review comparisons and didn't get too involved in much more.

No worries.  Though you did have both myself and my Intel contact kind of scratching our heads a bit :)

The 1240 does not support onboard graphics, so that explains the beep sequence you're hearing.  You'll either need to install a discrete graphics card or swap to a CPU that does support integrated graphics.

THat explains it, thanks for the help!  I'll tinker around with an old card I have and see what luck I have with it and check back with any issues I have in another post.  Thanks again!
