Thinkstation p620 NOT BOOTING

2021-07-22, 15:59 PM

I have a p620 Machine Type Model:30E1S0FH00

Since the day I got the unit, I've had issues turning it on.

After initial plugging in of power cord, I get one beep.

I push the power button and there's just a click and a display of red on the front panel too fast for me to see what it's displaying.

If I try to the power button again nothing at all happens. I need to unplug my power cord and plug it back in.

Eventually I noticed if I unplug my two monitors from the video card it will turn on and load windows no problem...I then plug the monitors back in and all is fine.

However, this is very annoying and unacceptable for such a nice machine.

What is the problem and what is the solution? I'm trying here before dealing with phone support.

Not that it should matter but I have a brand new Thinkvision 27in monitor and an older Dell monitor. Both cables are new and in perfect shape.

The system works fine (aside from noisy power supply) and I've never had any other issues with it.

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Thinkstation p620 NOT BOOTING

Just to add...this is not a consistent issue. It can power on 10x in a row just fine....then this issue pops up at random with no changes at all made to the unit...nothing moved or was unplugged etc...

What BIOS version is currently installed on your system?      If you are running an older version, you might consider updating the BIOS.       There are several methods of updating the BIOS (from within Windows, bootable CD Rom, or bootable EFI flash drive), so review the options and use the one you are most comfortable with.    I tend to prefer booting from a CD or Flash drive to take the OS completely out of the equation, but all methods will work.

Flash BIOS update - Flash from EFI Shell utility

Something certainly seems off here.

The single beep you hear when the system is first connected to AC power is expected.  This is the MCU initializing.  As long as AC stays connected, you shouldn't hear that specific beep during subsequent reboots.

But the part after that has me scratching my head.  You mention that it simply will refuse to power up after pushing the power button in certain circumstances?  Did you do a normal power down prior to that?  Or is it possible the system shut itself down (or crashed) before that point?

The fact that you mention it's intermittent leads me to believe it might be a case where the system is crashing or shutting itself down to protect itself.  A good example of this is where the workload somehow forces something to go out of spec (usually from a power perspective), and the PSU shuts the system down to protect itself from damage.  Typically if that happens, the PSU can latch up and and it would require a full AC reset to get it going again.  That's a bit of a shot in the dark though based on limited info.

What's your full system configuration, and if possible can you please describe what the system was doing prior to the shutdown (especially if said shutdown was unintentional)?

No. I only here a beep when I unplug and plug it back in.

I use the system as a personal pc with web browsing and light occasional gaming.

I always do a full power down from windows.

The system has never crashed or acted weird.

It doesn't get heavily used at all. I can go a week or more without using it.

In this situation pressing the power button will do literally nothing at all. It's a dead system.

Unplugging both monitors from the video card is what allowed it to boot.

Next time I will take video of what happens.

But this happened when I first got it as well. I thought I got a bad power supply.

I did move the entire system from one room to another when it did it last time.

It's plugged into an APC UPS. I've unplugged it and put it into a regular surge protector with no difference.

Why unplugging the monitors allowed it to boot... I have no idea. I've since powered it on 4 or 5 times with zero issue.

I never use any hibernation or stand-by modes. I always fully turn off the computer via windows menu.

Next time I'll take video and open a legit service ticket.

See attached for specs.

Logitech keyboard and mouse with USB bt receivers, USB wireless adapter, Soundblaster x g6, think vision and dell monitors plugged into video ports 1 and 2, APC ups plugged in via USB.

That's it.

Perfectly functional system... When it starts.

As stated... I went online and updated the bios and network adapter drivers without issue a couple days ago.

The action of unplugging the display to get it booting is certainly odd.  Are you using DP connections for your displays?  Are there any dongle inline in the signal path?

Another shot in the dark idea, but if you're using straight DP connections between your system and displays, try seeing if you can to a continuity check on pin20 on the DP cable with a multimeter.  By spec, that pin should NOT be connected internally in the cable.  However there are a bunch of bad cables out on the retail market where this connection is in place.  If you find pin20 is connected within your cable, I suggest trying to use another cable where that pin is not connected.

Re:Thinkstation p620 NOT BOOTING (it was the power supply)

So, I opened a warranty claim. Tech came and installed a new power supply and new power cable. Worked immediately.

So, it was some weird issue with the power supply.
