Two of my front USB ports don't work: P920

2021-09-16, 20:32 PM

I have a P920 and on the front panel, I notice that two (first and last) USB ports do not appear to work. They appear to have no power, as shown by plugging in an SSD drive, no lights. Any thoughts?

For future reference:

  • The first tech came with a motherboard replacement, but this did not solve the proble.
  • A second tech came out and eventually ordered a new chassis because the power/USB seems to be manufactured as a single unit.
  • This chassis replacement solved the problem.

Both techs were top-notch, and Lenovo's service and warranty won me as a diehard loyal customer.

Have you tried any other devices (such as a basic USB key, or USB keyboard/mouse)?

Are the backlit icons above the actual ports lit up for the ones in question?

The lights on all 4 ports on front are working.

I have tested by plugging in a keyboard to each port and can confirm that 1 and 4 do not accept keystrokes. 2 and 3 accept keystrokes.

There are a couple of things you could check:

1.  Go into BIOS setup and make sure that all of your front ports are enable and nothing was inadvertently disabled.

2.  Check the connection between the front I/O panel and the motherboard for the USB ports.  These should be 2 flat black connectors around the middle of the bottom edge of the board.  Reseat these if necessary.

I forget exactly how those ports are routed in the front panel, but it could be one of those motherboard connections is the issue.

If none of those solve the issue, you might want to try calling support directly for service.  It could be possible that the front panel assembly is faulty.  That is definitely NOT something that is easy to swap out on P920.
