Ubuntu 20.04 on Thinkstation S30??

2020-06-06, 16:35 PM

I wanted to install Ubuntu 20.04 alongside Windows 10.

First problem was that I could not install Ubuntu from Live DVD, because of an unsupported resolution issue, but after setting nomodeset in the Grub config, I could finally see the display at 640x480 and I  installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode.

However, after booting, there is no Grub, only Windows shows up and boots.

I have seen that other people with Thinkstation S30s have various problems with Ubuntu.

How can I get Grub to show up and has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu on the S30?

By the way, I am on the latest Bios version possible (2017), so that is not a problem.

Help is extremely appreciated!

What's your machine type model (MTM) of your S30?  What type of drive are you using as your boot drive?

As the system is booting through the Lenovo splash screens, try selecting the function F12 key to get the BIOS Startup menu.  What does this menu show in regards to your bootable drive?

One a side note, I'd normally test these kinds of things in the lab.  However, with COVID-19, we're all working from home with limited hardware so please be patient with us as we help debug your issue.

Re:Ubuntu 20.04 on Thinkstation S30??

These are the specifications:

Machine Type Model: 0569BZ7

My main drive is a 240GB Kingston SSD (Plugged in to a Blue SATA port)

I have 2 other HDDs which are used for data.

Yes, I got it to install from DVD after some graphic driver problems, but my PC refuses to show Grub / to boot Ubuntu, instead it boots Windows. On the F12 menu, I see the Kingston Drive, under UEFI it says "Windows Boot Manager" and under legacy, it says the model of the drive (Kingston  ************). Selecting the UEFI option from the kingston drive boots into Windows 10 Selecting legacy (yes, from the kingston), it boots Windows 7 from my other hard drive.

Should I try installing Ubuntu using legacy mode? If so, is there a disadvantage of using Legacy instead of UEFI?

Thank you very much for helping!

The main difference between UEFI and Legacy from a Linux perspective is the type of formatting.  UEFI typically uses GPT (Global Partitioning Table) whereas Legacy typically uses MBR (Master Boot Record).   UEFI allows you to boot a partition greater than 2.2 TB.  If I recall correctly, if your system is setup in Legacy mode, then I don't believe it will boot to an UEFI configured device.  What this means is that you might have to install Ubuntu in standard Legacy mode to get the system to recognize the Ubuntu drive as a bootable disk.  Your other option would be to change your BIOS CSM settings to UEFI, however, doing so, may not allow you to boot your Win7/Win10 drive.  Really, you should be matching the partitioning tables for Linux as what you have for Windows (GPT vs MBR).

You mentioned that your HDD is installed on the blue port.  Keep in mind that in the S30, the blue ports are tied to the Intel SCU controller where as the red/orange ports are tied to the standard Intel SATA/AHCI controller.  When you attempted to install Ubuntu 20.04 on the system with the drive attached to the blue SCU port, did the Ubuntu installer recognize your HDD?

Look at https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation/UEFI-Mode-installation-of-Linux-distributions-on-Thinkstation/td-p/1018555

The problem with S30 is that it only accepts boot entries with the name "Windows Boot Manager".

I believe you can solve your problem booting with the live cd and using "sudo efibootmgr" to find out the UEFI boot configuration. And then rename the boot entry for grub to "Windows Boot Manager" or add a new entry pointing to grub. You have to put the grub boot entry with the name "Windows Boot Manager" at the first position. Then it should boot grub and grub should have an entry to boot into Windows 10.

I had to use this approach to boot Ubuntu 18.04 on my S30.

It is possible to do this setup using Windows 10 and using bcdedit from a command prompt (you have to start the command prompt as Administrator!).

You could try to run bcdedit /enum all to get a list of all your boot entries.

When you find the boot entry for grub you could use bcdedit to rearrange the boot order and put the grub entry first.

But you still have to rename the description of the grub boot entry to "Windows Boot Manager".

This is a "feature" of the UEFI BIOS of S30.

Well, I just saw this:

https://news.lenovo.com/pressroom/press-releases/lenovo-brings-linux-certification-to-thinkpad-and-thinkstation-workstation-portfolio-easing-deployment-for-developers-data-scientists/

This means that Lenovo will certify all its Thinkstation series soon?

What I don't understand is if they will certify the P series only or also the other series.

Our entire portfolio of ThinkStation and ThinkPad P Series workstations will now be certified

Can someone from Lenovo confirm if the S30 will be certified and at what date?

I suspect that will only be for current systems, the S30 is 7+ years old.

Let's hope Lenovo won't disappoint me with their statement. If they said they will support all of their Thinkstations, then the age doesn't matter. Let's hope they will fix the Bios on the S30 to support more than "Windows Boot Manager" and "Red Hat Linux Entreprise" in UEFI mode. For now I will try the Trick with EFI.

How did you exactly rename the existing Grub entry? I went into my LIVE DVD and inspected the entries, and there is Ubuntu but I don't know how to rename it. Of course, I searched but I could not find a specific command to rename the Ubuntu entry. Perhaps you did it in Windows?

Supposedly the S30 was certified for RHEL 6 and Ubuntu 14.04. Unfortunately it appears Ubuntu removed their information about the certification since 14.04 is no longer supported. Digging through Google I saw a claim you need to disable both fastboot and secure boot to get it to work on the S30.
