Underclocked NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti 16GB with 400W P330?

Would an underclocked/non-OC 4060Ti 16GB with a 8-Pin-PCIe connection that is short enough (e.g., a single fan) work with a P330 with 400W PSU?

---

I am still happy with my i9900K P330 ThinkStation with a 400W PSU and am now at the crossroads of whether to replace or upgrade it.
The new 4060Ti 16GB would be an ideal upgrade for the system, especially because of the VRAM size. I mainly use the system for AI, not for gaming, so CPU and GPU are seldom both at high loads at the same time.

From the specifications, I see several points to look out for:

- Some 4060Ti cards will need a 16-Pin-PCIe connector, those would probably not work with the 6+2-Pin-PCIe connector of the PSU.

- With 165W needed to run, this is very close to the maximum of what the 400W can handle for a longer time. I plan to underclock the card and possibly the CPU to deal with it.

- I would have to find a version that fits in the case, so probably an ATX factor one with but a single fan.

Did I miss anything?

Thank you in advance!

Re:Underclocked NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti 16GB with 400W P330?

I think you've hit on all the major concerns.

Fit is going to be a big issue, since the P330 Tower chassis is somewhat limited in size, and GPU design has been increasing significantly in physical dimensions in the last few generations.

From a power standpoint, you're going to be right on the edge.  Technically we supported the P5000 GPU in P330 Tower with the 400W PSU, but not in combination with a 95W TDP CPU from what I can tell.  The 4060Ti does come in a little lower than the P5000 in terms of TDP, so that helps.  But I would have concerns about input EDP power (surges) that could force the PSU to latch up due to overcurrent or overpower conditions.  Cabling is probably concern as well as GeForce cards typically have their power connectors on the top side of the GPU, which increases your z-height requirement.  This is particularly concerning if you do end up choosing a card with a CEM5/12VHPWR connector due to the fragility of that connector.

Underclocking or limiting CPU and/or GPU power could help with the overall power concerns.  But it's tough to say where this combo would fall since we've not looked at the 4060Ti on older platforms like P330.

Re:Underclocked NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti 16GB with 400W P330?

Does the P330 support dual-slot PCIe cards?

After a lot of consideration, the power issue really is the deal-breaker. There are solutions out there, but I don't want the case to go up in smoke ;)

But I discovered that the NVIDIA RTX 4000 SFF (dual slot card) should fit. While pricey (not targeting the gamer's market), it has 20GB VRAM, uses only 70W (5W less than the Quadro P2200), needs also no extra cabling, and is shorter.

Would there be any problem with a dual-slot card? I don't think there is anything on the mainboard or the case that would obstruct that.

It might even be possible to use TWO RTX 4000 SFF in the case, turning the P330 into a real power-house :) Speed in games might be limited due to the PCIe bandwidth, but for AI computation, this is not relevant.

Re:Underclocked NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti 16GB with 400W P330?

Sorry for being late to the party

I own a PNY 4060 ti 16gb

Undervolt it to 0.950V@2650mhz

Runs at 120W running F@H all day instead of normal 160W

Hope it helps a bit.
