What adapter to use for this strange USB 3 motherboard port header?

2019-11-16, 0:16 AM

My Lenovo C30 have a 'strange' motherboard header and this cable inserted into it

that go to front of case and makes 2x USB 3 ports from it .

I bought a new case that have a front USB 3 port that need to be inserted to a normal blue motherboard port like this

What adapter do I need to make the new case USB3 port working ?

Convert from first 'strange' one into a second like one?

30-series ThinkStations that support front panel USB3 ports utilize a proprietary connector at the motherboard level, as shown in your pic below.  At the time, we decided to use that connector as it had very good signal quality properties and it was similar to connectors used on other Lenovo platforms.  To my knowledge, I don't believe there is a "converter" that will allow that cable assembly to plug to a standard USB3 pin header at the board level.

One way you might be able to get the USB3 front panel ports on your new chassis to function correctly would be to find a USB3 add-in card that has support for the connector that comes with the chassis.  Something like this might work OK:

https://www.amazon.com/PCI-Ports-Header-Express-Dual/dp/B07GSQR6D4

And just for reference, the internal pins on that card edge connector are "crooked", and are that way for a reason.  The traces on the edge connector have staggered lengths to ensure the power/ground connections are made prior to the data connections when that cable is inserted into the connector on the board.

I couldn't get that link to work, but was able to snoop around on Ebay and find the adapter that I think you're referencing.  It's difficult for me to say whether or not that adapter would work OK.  It's probably making the correct basic signal connections, but I'd be concerned about signal quality with that device.  Not to mention, the heigh poses a flex/breakage risk to the onboard connector.

Also, keep in mind I only did some quick searching for a USB add-in card that would show you the alternate solution.  You might want to do some more research to make sure that adapter is right for your situation.  It looks like it's using a similar controller to the one we used on the 30-series boards, so that's probably good.  But you'll want to double check cable connections and cable lengths to make sure it's the right solution for you.

Do you have a source (link) for this adapter? I have had no luck trying to find one.

ThinkStation S30 motherboard has a unique slot for cable that plugs into this slot for two front USB 3.0 female connections that now normally plugged into a USB 3.0 19pin/20pin Motherboard Header. So, this unique 28 pin slot that looks like a PCIe mini slot cable to be used with this is unfindable but an adapter that fits this unique slot has the USB 3.0 19pin/20pin header and the picture of it this adapter is right aside. Basically, I would like to have the two USB 3.0 on the front of this system box and cable that fits the motherboard marked with JP106 slot will work or this little adapter with work and that what I’m after. Thank You, BEChase

I purchased one from from mrgood92 on eBay. It's listed as a “Lenovo C30 S30 D30 motherboard front USB 3.0 to standard chassis USB 3.0 adapter”. It’s priced at $8.00 with $21.00 Expedited Shipping, but at checkout you can select Standard Shipping for $5.90 which made the cost acceptable to me; shipping will take a while, though (about a month from China), but it works fine and I am one happy camper!

Thanks so much for the info - I really appreciate it. :) Unfortunately the seller has no items for sale at the moment, but perhaps I will drop him a message. Thanks again!
