What are COAX connectors on the Back of my New ThinkStation?

2020-06-26, 20:00 PM

Hello:

I just received a new ThinkStation P520 workstation Model 30BES1M400.

I have two Connectors on the Back of my computer that look like what you would screw a COAX cable for TV into.  What are they for?  They are not in my user manual or parts list for the model I purchased. See the attached image.

Thanks.

Note:  The system also came with an antenna that screws into the connectors.  Is this for TV?

Welcome to the Community

I'm betting WiFi.

Doc:

You are correct!  It is WiFI.  Why do they have two connectors?  Wouldn't you only use one?

Thanks,

Rich Locus

It’s a diversity system that uses the better signal between two antennas. Notice newer routers have as many as six.

Those are technically SMA connectors used by your wifi/bluetooth adapter, which in P520 would be the Intel 8265.  That wifi adapter has dual antennas, but because P520 doesn't support a front (internal) antenna, the design instead routs both of those antennas to the rear I/O of the adapter.

I'm guessing the antenna your system came with is a larger square-ish design with a triangular hole in the top of it?  That should be the correct antenna for your system  if memory serves.  Other systems that can make use of the internal front antenna will use a proprietary front antenna design and a dual band dipole antenna for the rear connection.
