does P500 workstation support VT-x?

2017-08-16, 15:01 PM

win 10 pro task manager shows Virtualization enabled regardless enabled/disabled setting of VT-d (sic) in Legacy BIOS

BUT vB0x 5.1.26 claims VT-x missing when i try to install guest windows 2008 64-bit dataCentre ...

vBox installs windows 2008 32-bit dataCentre no problem

Note:  i have also asked the SuperUser and vBox communities.  thnx

Welcome to the forum.

VT-d being enabled/disabled won't affect VT-x. They're two different virtualization technologies. The painfully short version is that 'd' is for device connections with a VM and 'x' is for virtualization in the CPU. VT-x is enabled by default and all E5-16xx v3 CPUs support it, so it should work fine on your P500. I'm using both VT-x and VT-d on my P700 without issue.

Do you have the Hyper-V service and VirtualBox installed simultaneously? If so, try removing the Hyper-V service and see if VT-x frees up. Hyper-V tends to take priority at boot since it's baked into the OS, preventing third-party apps from accessing virtualization.

I assume you aren't trying to install a nested VM? As in, your issue is with Win 10 and not from virtualizing within the 2008 Datacenter machine, correct? You mention the issue being in the guest, which makes me wonder if this is possibly a nesting issue.

Any luck with your virtual setup? Did you get it figured out? Have any other questions?
