M.2 dual backplane for ST550, can it support 2 diff sized drives in non-RAID?

2020-12-03, 17:14 PM

The M.2 dual backplane for ST550 is designed for two drives in RAID configuration.  Can it be used to support two different M.2 drives of different sizes in a non-RAID configuration (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb)?

Hi Sir

Please refer to below document for M.2 configuration.

https://lenovopress.com/lp0769-thinksystem-m2-drives-adapters

From the document, it support JBOD mode. But for the drive, we suggest only use lenovo certified drives. Thanks.

Features of the Dual M.2 Adapter (7Y37A01093 and 4M17A60519):

  • PCIe 2.0 x2 host interface (connects to the PCH)
  • Based on the Marvell 88SE9230 6 Gbps SATA controller
  • Supports one or two 6 Gbps SATA M.2 drives
  • Support 42mm, 60mm and 80mm drive form factors (2242, 2260 and 2280 respectively)
  • RAID functionality provided by the M.2 adapter
  • RAID 1 by default; also supports RAID 0 and JBOD
  • UEFI-based settings to enable/disable RAID mode and to review inventory
  • Supports Secure Boot
  • Adapter and drive firmware update using Lenovo firmware tools
  • Management via I2C interface

@ RichardS-VA

Hello Richard it looks like my colleague provided you the answer in the previous post.

  • RAID 1 by default; also supports RAID 0 and JBOD

To expand on that see the link below.

  • If you are configuring the ThinkSystem M.2 with Mirroring Enablement Kit, you can choose RAID 0 or RAID 1 as the RAID level. Choose RAID 1 to implement mirroring.

  • If you are configuring integrated software RAID or ThinkSystem M.2 with Mirroring Enablement Kit, the Add Hot Spare Drive check box will not be displayed.

This came from the RAID Setup guide.

https://sysmgt.lenovofiles.com/help/index.jsp?topic=%2FLXPM%2FRAID_setup.html

So in short yes, you should be able to do what your looking for by creating two RAID 0 arrays.

Still looking for an answer to the original question.
