SR650 - 2 Backplanes - 8 Harddisks - how to distribute

2020-07-13, 11:40 AM

I've a new Lenovo SR650 with 2 Backplanes and 16 Harddisk-slots.

In the first step only 8 Harddisks are installed.

For performance reasons, is there a suggestion how to distribute the

drives across the bays? Every Backplane has its own cables to the

RAID-Controller, so I think there could be a performance issue ...

Hi AlexHa678

Please refer to SR650 product guide.  You can refer to the internal-storage section to configure your hard drive.

Please feel free to leave your comment, thank you for support Lenovo

Hi AlexHa678

How many RAID card did you install on the server?

You can refer the ThinkSystem SR650 Setup Guide section Server models with sixteen 2.5-inch drives to understand the cable routing for server models with sixteen 2.5-inch drives. And you can base on your hard drive configuration requirement to install 8 hard disks to the same or different RAID controller for the best performance.

Re:SR650 - 2 Backplanes - 8 Harddisks - how to distribute

Hi Dannyshueh,

I've one RAID-Controller. Sorry for my questions I'm a software engineer and not a hardware

engineer. But I think, when I have 16 bays for 8 harddisks, for performance-reason it can't be,

that I will insert the 8 harddisks into the bays 0 to 7, so only 1 backplane is used.

I think, the performance should be better, when I distribute the physical harddisks (SSD-Disks)

accross the two backplanes. But I can't find a figure like for the RAMs, who to distribute the

harddisks accross the bays, if I have more bays than physical drives ...

Sorry, I'm not able to find such a diagramm in the technical doku. Maybe my search is not

correct ...

Alex.

Hi AlexHa678

I assumed your server model is sixteen 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drives, one 16i RAID adapter. And you will install 2.5" SAS/SATA SSD.

According to the cable routing as below, both BP1 and BP2 are connecting to the same RAID controller. No matter which backplane you are installing hard disk into, they are sharing the performance from RAID controller.

if server setup with one raid controller /HBA with 16 hdd slot ,however only 8 drives installed, the controller could be 16i /24i, there was no performance bottleneck on how the hdd was distributed

as 16i have 4 port, each pair connect to each hdd back-plane  (c0 ,c1 connect BP1, C1,C2 connect to BP2).   If those drive are SSD to setup raid, pls setup the vd policy to NRWTD ( No read ahead, write through ,direct IO),  which could enable the fastpath feature to accelerate performance.
