ST550 firmware update bricks system

2020-03-01, 20:33 PM

Trying to update ST550 model 7X10CT01WW from UEFI O0E112P (1.20) to O0E1220 (1.40) as a prerequisite to version O0E152L (2.51).

Used XClarity Provisioning Manager at console, not web-interface, using the same steps described in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6ZwJoc1Jy0 to update to O0E1220 (1.40).

Received the following errors:

  1. First error appears, then system shuts down, does not reboot.
  2. Fast green flash on power button, yellow alert light on front panel.
  3. Pull power cord, reinsert, slow green flash on power button and no yellow alert button on front panel.
  4. Power on and receive second error, then system shuts down, does not reboot.
  5. Fast green flash on power button, yellow alert light on front panel.

The following steps do not work:

  1. Attempted to clearing CMOS using jumper and removing battery, still receive same errors.
  2. Unable to roll-back UEFI firmware update since unable to access any provisioning management methods.
  • Do not have access to XClarity Provisioning Manager at console since ST550 shuts down before "F1 System Setup" prompt.
  • Do not have access to mobile phone USB connection since ID button will not turn blue and device does not receive USB signal connection from ST550.
  • Do not have access to web-based provisioning since ST550 shuts down.

Hi RichardS-VA,

Can you access the XCC? If the XCC can be accessed, please use the XCC to remotely update the firmware. As this video demonstrated: https://youtu.be/ZK0p6Y0n-Hs

Please note the prerequisites to update this UEFI version is the server must be installed with a minimum XCC firmware Version 1.08 (Build ID:  CDI306X).

If the XCC cannot be accessed, please open a support ticket and the Lenovo Service Representative will assist you to solve the problem as soon as possible.
