ThinkSystem ST250 ThinkSystem RAID 530-8i firmware question

2021-02-28, 14:51 PM

What is the correct firmware to use on a ST250 (7Y46) ESXi host running Windows VMs for ThinkSystem RAID 530-8i controllers? The firmware for Windows or for Linux? Since ESXi is really neither, it's not clear. Or is it determined by what the guest OSes are?

Thanks, everyone! Turns out I was able to apply all firmware updates from a Windows VM on the ESXi host, after logging in to the XClarity Controller from that VM. Appreciate all the feedback. :)

Hello RDUInHouse,

Firmware installer program is only available for Windows and Linux. My recommendation is to created a bootable media by using BoMC with the following steps. Once the bootable media is created, boot the system with the media and follow the instruction on the display.

Download the latest Bootable Media Creator (BoMC)
https://support.lenovo.com/jp/ja/solutions/ht115048-lenovo-xclarity-essentials-bootable-media-creator

(The steps to create ISO image with Windows version)

Welcome to the bootable media creator

Acquire location
> Check the Lenovo support web site
> Latest available indivudial updates
Network Access

Target directory
> (Set directory you want to create the ISO image)

Use default settings for remaining options

Thank you,

Hi Sir,

Beside of BoMC, you can refer to the Lenovo ThinkSystem firmware update page to update firmware by other tools.

you can use windows version*.exe) or linux version (.bin) to update controller fw on supported os Host level.  but for ESXI, the only method was to use BOMC( tool based on linux os)  to update all componet on server .

when you create bomc, it will download all supported fw for this type of server, it was bootable for supported server, which  was bare-metal tool to update code on servers.
