ata5: SATA link down

2020-12-04, 7:13 AM

Dear All,

We lost connectivity to the server completely though we could ping the server and get a reply but no other activity could be done. This condition lasted for 2hrs and then the server access restored itself and it seems the server never restarted.

Checking dmesg log we got the below errors on the disk. Kindly assist diagnose. Our server is a Think System SR590.

those msg was from dmsg during previous os booting ( as the timestamp indicate ardound 3 second when booting),  that's not the log during your isssue.

meanwhile, the ata sata down events was expected , as server installed with 930-8i controller, those onboard sata port showed down there。

log from my server

Hi Sir

There have many reason will cause this issue, bad drive, unsupported drive or bad storage link. I suggest you contact lenovo service and support team in your Country/Retion directly. They will support you to do the hardware check and analysis related hardware log and system log to determine the issue. Thanks.

Thanks Jacky,

i have decoded the dmesg timestamp and found out that the issue actually happened on October not on Dec 2nd. At that time it seems the nothing happend to the server, now i turn to wonder what really happened to cause the server to be completely unreacheable though we could Ping the server. See below converted timestamp.

Are there logs i can send that can assist check we have installed Centos 7 on the server and have been operational since 2018 without any hitches.

hi Peter,

The link down events triggered in dmesg looks nothing to us. If you are willing us to know what happened on these SATA drives, you can use SMART tool to capture HDD event to see whether any problems on it or it is just a sleep state in drives.

SMART for CentOS7:
