How to delete and stop RRbackups?

2008-07-16, 22:30 PM

T61/Vista

I do not require the assistance of Lenovo recovery. I am using other software to achieve a similar purpose. How can I delete the directory (and all files beneath) C:\RRbackups? I am totally blocked from even clicking on the folder.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

If you're not going to use Rescue & Recovery for doing backups and restores, then perhaps just uninstall it.   To delete the backups first, just launch R&R, then go into the Advanced menu and select Delete Backups (assuming you've already taken some backups).  Then do your uninstall.

I would strongly suggest you reconsider, though.  R&R is a very handy tool that can restore your system back to a working state from a saved backup.  You can also access the pre-desktop environment in case the system won't start due to operating system crashes or failures.  If you're concerned about the backups taking up space, there are ways to streamline the backup process by excluding files/folders from the backup, specifying files/folders for single instance, and limiting the number of incrementals to 2.  Just some food for thought.   R&R has gotten my R61 back up and running many times.

I run nightly automated data backups and have an Acronis image post app installs and current so I think I'm fairly well protected. I wouldn't mind keeping the RRbackup if I knew what it was doing and, particularly, how much disk space it was using. Since I cannot open the directory and see what's there, it seems a big question mark. Can you advise how I could determine what in the way of backup is contained?

Sure,  it's just a matter of launching the R&R application itself.

Go to Start --> Programs --> ThinkVantage --> Rescue & Recovery

If it's at least ver 4.x, you'll see a simplified main interface with 1 button to backup and 1 to restore.  There should be a small link on the bottom left to Click on to go to the Advanced menu.

On the Advanced window, you can click on "View all backups"  to see the size of each backup.  You can  also click on  "Set schedule and preferences" to schedule your backups and change the number of incrementals.

The first backup that would have been taken is referred to as the "base" backup.  All the subsequent scheduled backups that get taken are known as "incrementals".  If you're interested in more information, you can take a look at the R&R Deployment Guide which can be downloaded from the ThinkVantage Admin tools page:  http://www.lenovo.com/thinkvantageadmin

That was a huge help. I reset the primary backup to an external USB hard drive and the secondary to my wife's networked second drive.

After I saved the preference I was given a choice to delete or save existing backups, an all or none thing so I left well enough alone.  After a few weeks and I've seen that I've got good backups on the new locations, how would I then delete the original backups on my active hard drive?

Mark,

When you go to the R&R advanced menu and choose Delete Backups from "Advanced" on the menu bar, it should show you a list of your current backups.  You would put a check mark in each box next to the backup you want to delete.

Are you logged in with Administrator priviliges? Maybe that's why your delete doesn't work?

Also, there is a means of deleting backups via a command line utility, But this is for advanced users.  Proceed at your own risk!

I would recommend you thoroughly read the Rescue & Recovery Deployment Guide which is on the Admin Tools page:  http://www.lenovo.com/thinkvantageadmin before you try to use the command line utility.  The utility can also be downloaded from that same page.  It is part of the R&R Admin Tools package.  I've never tried it myself, so I can only refer you to the Deployment Guide.
