Wireless security type in access connection

is there (or will be) some option to determine which security type is used on current AP (like WEP/WPA/WPA2 and moreover AES/TKIP at WPA)?

It takes a lot of time with blind-trying everytime i try to connect to some new AP or to some network.

For example when BFU friend just knows that the passphrase is "abc", but nothing about used security type.

In windows(XP) default wireless connection application will actually automaticaly search for the proper security type and you have to just write down the passphrase.

Thanks for reply or tip to some 3rd party application, which'll detect these information from AP.
