Re: [Guide] X1 Carbon 7th Generation Ubuntu compatability

Hi Dave,

Thank you very much for the instruction!
It works on Lenovo S940. However I did not have to recompile the kernel since SOF support was already enabled in 5.3 on 19.10 and I omited the part with modules loading. Some modules were breaking driver for touchpad and it works without loading extra modules. Microphone and subwoofer work.

Unfortunately I experiece seveeral issues:

1) every time when I plug and unplug headphones level of speaker volume and headphpnes volume in alsamixer resets to 35. Is it possible to avoid it?
2) after I unplug the headphones default device swithces to HDMI and there is no sound. How can I make it always Bass Speaker?
3) Do I need HDMI for the speakers in the external monitor?

Are you saying you get the microphone to work in 19.10? Do I have to do something in particular to get it working? Also, I do this to get sound working better:

1.

Edit /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common by adding the following above [Element PCM]:

[Element Master]
switch = mute
volume = ignore

A PulseAudio restart is required for this change to take effect. Make sure to increase the "Master" channel volume to 100% for the top-firing speakers to work (using amixer or alsamixer, found in alsa-utils).

2.

Uncommented two lines in the file: /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:

enable-lfe-remixing = yes
lfe-crossover-freq = 250

Then I enable "Analog Surround 2.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input" in the Configuration tab of the utility "pavucontrol" (not installed by default).

I spoke too soon. The 5.3 kernel isn't doing anything useful with the speakers, either, as far as I can tell. Awaiting 5.5!

Hi. I've followed the instruction given here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1868200#p1868200 and it fixed the mic problem for me on ubuntu 18.04.4

Re: [Guide] X1 Carbon 7th Generation Ubuntu compatability

```
[ 3.171651] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: bound 0000:00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_component_bind_ops [i915])
[ 3.225381] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: autoconfig for ALC285: line_outs=2 (0x14/0x17/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker
[ 3.225382] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
[ 3.225383] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: hp_outs=1 (0x21/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
[ 3.225384] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: mono: mono_out=0x0
[ 3.225384] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: inputs:
[ 3.225385] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: Mic=0x19
```

Ubuntu 18.04

Spent like 6 hours trying all the stuff on the net to get the microphones working.

No luck.

In the end I just started using my earbuds with integrated mic. Works fine.

Another option till it's fixed is: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32973953613.html

Does anyone know if the latest Ububntu 19 would help?

After adding `switch=mute` and `volume=ignore` to that file, there's no sound at all, and Settings -> Sound shows "Dummy Output" as the only sound device.

Re:[Guide] X1 Carbon 7th Generation Ubuntu compatability

This is what I did to get everything working on my X1v7 20R1:

  1. Installed Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa)
  2. Installed Ukuu then used that to install the mainline kernel v5.5.10
  3. ran `apt update && apt upgrade` to get the latest versions of PulseAudio and ALSA
  4. ran `apt install tlp acpi-call-dkms` to get better power saving and throttling control
  5. reboot

I spent a while trying to crowbar fixes into Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.10 but it was a mess.

To get audio working required the latest versions of everything in the stack

  • SOF kernel driver snd-sof-pci (from kernel v5.5+)
  • SOF firmware (from linux-firmware >= 1.187)
  • ALSA packages (from alsa-ucm-conf and alsa-topology-conf >= v1.2.2)
  • PulseAudio (from pulseaudio >= 13.99)

now sound works with all 4 speakers, the microphone records clearly and the volume keys all do the right thing.
