Re: [Guide] X1 Carbon 7th Generation Ubuntu compatability

2019-08-27, 23:12 PM

[EDITED]

Ubuntu 19.04 will not come back after system suspend.

- Changed BIOS to sleep mode: Linux

- installed latest TLP.

Happens both on AC and battery, and when the lid is closed or initiated suspend from GNOME.

Both the red LED on the lid, and the power light on the size are on (not blinking)

Form syslog:

Aug 27 16:56:45 AlteredCarbon whoopsie[2260]: [16:56:45] offline
Aug 27 16:56:47 AlteredCarbon systemd[1]: Starting TLP suspend/resume...
Aug 27 16:56:47 AlteredCarbon systemd[1]: Started TLP suspend/resume.
Aug 27 16:56:47 AlteredCarbon systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
Aug 27 16:56:47 AlteredCarbon systemd[1]: Starting Suspend...
Aug 27 16:56:47 AlteredCarbon systemd-sleep[4994]: Suspending system...
Aug 27 16:56:47 AlteredCarbon kernel: [ 162.668395] PM: suspend entry (deep)

Next message is when the system wakes up.

Just got this machine a few days ago. I did not run into this problem at all for a few days, and then it started happening. Don't know what changed.

Any help will be appreciated.

I would love to keep this laptop but this is a major issue, and if it cannot be solved it will have to go back to Lenovo...

Does this happen without TLP installed?

Is bluetooth on?  I was having the same issues until I ran across the post below.  I implemented the script he made to shut off bluetooth before suspend and it seems to be a work around to the issue.

I tried to disable and then remove TLP, but it didn't help.

Since I did not have this problem after installing Ubuntu, I figured I should trace my steps. Another clue I got is that the system appeared to be trying to get into deep suspend, but then wakes up and hangs. The led lights fade off and on and then stays on.

A prime suspect was Bluetooth, so I deleted the paired devices (headphones and a mouse). So far it seems to have done the trick -- the laptop wakes up from suspend state.

Interestingly, the devices were not paired while I saw the problem -- they were both powered off, and I didn't even pair them in those sessions that got hanged. It seems that just having their profile caused the system to wake up, maybe look for them (this is just a guess).

I will see if the problem does not come back for a day or two, then reinstall TLP, and later try to pair the Bluetooth devices again. It would be interesting to hear if people had a similar problem.

Wow, your kernel compilation recipe worked for me - thanks a lot, DaveOber! One issue that I have is that only the bottom speakers seem to work and both "Speaker" and "Bass Speaker" UCMs seem to only control bottom speakers. I suspect that this might be due to a typo in the ucm config or something, but can't really pin it down. Have you experienced the same problem?

Sorry, nevermind, I've realised it was my mistake. All 4 speakers are actually engaged.

It looks like there is a new BIOS update as of 02-Sept.  I do not see it in fwupdmgr yet.

Has anyone running Linux updated to the new BIOS yet?

I've updated it few days ago, my suggestion is: don't update!

I got problems with restart, sometimes it works and sometimes it shuts down and freeze in a black screen.

The power light is on, but it never restarts. I need to press and hold the power button to shut down and then press the button to turn on the laptop.

Really annoying, I plan to revert this update.

Kernel 5.3 problems:  I have been running with kernel 5.2.x series with good success ... I even did the Sept BIOS upgrade with no problems.

However,  beginning with 5.2.15, all 5.3 release candidates and the new official 5.3.0 release, the system fails to boot.   It begins, I get the ACPI error messages I have always got on the X1C7, but then the system freezes.

Anyone have any advice?
