How to dual boot Windows 10 and Kubuntu 20.04 on Legion T5 28IMB05

2020-12-10, 18:02 PM

I ran into lots of issues and was not able to find any solutions online.  This is what end up working for me.

Turn off Secure boot
Download Rufus usb bootable drive util
https://rufus.ie/

Download Kubuntu
Use rufus to create a bootable usb drive.
In the rufus util make sure that he Persistent partition is set to no persistence.

That was it. There may be other usb utils that work but Rufus is the only one that worked for me.  I tried one other, universal-usb-installer-1.9.9.8, that did not work.  It has worked with other machines just not this one. My friend that told me to us Rufus tried at least three different utils.

I hope this saves some people time.  Lenovo please add linux install guides to your knowledge base.

Thanks,

Chad.

Hi Chad,

Thanks for posting this.  I'm curious: what issues did you run into?  I _never_ use tools of any kind to build bootable EFI media. Too many options...

Just now tried Kubuntu 20.10 in my usual way: MBR/FAT32 flash drive, copy the _contents_ of the ISO to it, using 7zip, windows explorer, your favorite (un) archiving tool...

Boots fine - even with Secure Boot _ON_ - and runs live on my TP X1 Yoga Gen 5.  Will test on my son's Legion Y540 when I get a chance.

Wondering what issues you ran into,

Z.

The only way I was able to get the USB bootable to actually load Kubuntu was in legacy mode but then running the install failed. It would fail at the partition setup.

Without legacy mode, it would fail to verify the drive contents.  I tested the drive on my Asus laptop and it worked perfectly.  Switching to Rufus did the trick for me.

In your Lenovo BIOS Setup Utility (T5-28IMB05)

  • Boot mode: UEFI only
  • CSM: disabled
  • Secure boot: disabled

in order to install modern OS (and to run them)
