Is P14s Gen2 (TigerLake) Ubuntu-compatible?

2021-05-17, 7:56 AM

Hi,

according to this article it is Ubuntu-ready but it is not specified exactly which gen. I'm most worried about Modern Standby which is the only option on intel TigerLake systems - there is no BIOS setting to change from S0 to S3(Linux) mode. Is it likely to cause problems or make certification(like for gen 1) impossible?

I had Linux installed for a while but then I removed it and did not test it that much.

Hi,

I can confirm that Tigerlake platforms (including the T14 G2) only support modern standby as required by Intel and that's what we're certifying the platforms with.

We've not completed the cert yet for the T14 G2 but it's in the final stages. There aren't any blocking issues though there is a minor wifi/bluetooth performance issue that is being investigated - it's unlikely to be a blocker and should be fixed by oneline update later (there's a fix being worked on by Intel)

S0ix on Intel platforms in Linux is good. The Intel power team recommend it over S3 and we've been testing it without issues thus far. AMD are working on their support so for AMD platforms you should still use S3 right now but expect that to change in the not too distant future

Are you sure there is no S3 switch (aka "Linux sleep mode") in UEFI settings?.. I was considering replacing failing AMD machines with Gen2 Intel, but this would be a show-stopper.

I checked several times in BIOS but have not found anything. And also there is this reply from Lenovo's Support Specialist regarding T14 gen 2:

> Tigerlake platform does not support S3 sleep, There may not be any other way for the T14 gen 2
> We also have received the info that we are unaware of any plans to introduce at this time.

There are some other laptops with TigerLake and Linux installed as default but I'm not sure if it works well. I'm wondering is it a matter of waiting several months for things to settle down or Linux users would be better off buying older PCs for now?

Woah! That's quite a move... Let me check the current state of S0ix support in Linux...

Many thanks for your input.

I would like to clarify - you referred to T14 G2 but I'd mainly be interested in P14s G2. I assume that these are very similar platforms so once one is certified/compatible, the other will be too. Is that correct?

Hi,

Yes - P14s G2 is Tigerlake so same applies :) I think all our Intel platforms (linux certified) are this year actually.

Thanks. "Good" on the mainline or LTS (5.10.XX) ?
