Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Hi,

I recently purchased the Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM and I would like to install Linux because of work. Created a Ubuntu USB Live Stick, tested it in my previous laptop, disabled secure boot and fast boot, enter bios, set boot priority and ready to go. After setting the boot priority, the laptop restarts and when it's going to show the UEFI Ubuntu Menu just like how it's supposed to be, it's not. All I got was a Lenovo logo, and an underscore cursor in the top-left edge of the screen. Tried typing something, didn't work. I thought this was probably because of BIOS mode, so I thought I can change it to Legacy. But guess what? Only UEFI is available.

Can somebody helped me through this because my work is relying on Linux, and I hate how Windows Subsystem Linux behave.

Thank you

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Welcome to the community Forums!

Sorry about the trouble. Some of our products would to be Linux Certified first in order to be able to install and use the Linux OS in our product smoothly. Check more about it in this : https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht082374. Here are our only Linux Certified products: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd031426

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Hi,

Thank you for your reply, but it's not solving my problem right now as I already purchased the laptop. It would be really helpful if I am PLANNING to buy a Yoga 330.

Is there any workaround for BIOS or something?

Could you try to check if the if the USB flash drive is detected in the Boot Menu? You could access the Boot Menu via the Novo Button Menu.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. In BIOS it is detected, and I was able to set it as priority to boot. But, when it reboots, the Linux menu for install and live version didn't show up. Just a single underscore and Lenovo logo.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

What we are actually doing are just best effort, since the Yoga 330 was only designed for Windows 10, and not even certified for Linux OS. Possible reason why that the Boot Mode is only set to UEFI. This means that there's no guarantee that we could even install the Linux OS.

You could try to turn off the laptop, then press the Novo Button (the whole next to the POwer button). Then on the Novo Button Menu, select Boot Menu, not BIOS set up. From the Boot Menu, select your USB flash drive and see if it will load the Linux OS.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Hi, did you manage to install linux on this machine? I'm planning to buy one of this, but also I want to install linux on it. Also I know that Fedora has secure boot to install, so I think this would be a good choice, but no sure if it's going to work.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Hello,

I guess it is too late, but I thought I should share my expericense.

I have installed Lubuntu 19 to Lenovo Yogo 330-11|GM as follows:

  • Installed ISO Image with Rufus.

  • Shrank C Drive.

  • Made Windows 10 restart and open BIOS Setting.

  • Disabled the secure boot via BIOS Setting.

  • Changed the boot order to refer USB at first via BIOS Setting.

  • Rebooted the laptop and saw Lubuntu is booted in live mode.

Before I actually installed Lubuntu, I also tried this step with "MX Linux" and "Manjaro (XFCE)". All of them showed the graphical user interface and let me check if I can use Wi-Fi Network.

  • During the installation I created 2 partitions for "/" and "var", and assigned "/boot/efi" to the existing partition (having Windows Boot Loader, I think).

Now I am mucking around the settings in Lubuntu

Smiley Happy

Re: Lenovo Yoga 330-11IGM Cannot boot Linux USB

Dear,

Really good news with your post. I'll try to do this in this weekend. Did you put ISO using Rufus in a PenDrive? Some configuration (in Rufus) specific?

May I ask you, what is "Shrank C Drive"

Thanks.

Yes, I downloaded an ISO Image from websites like https://lubuntu.net, ran Rufus to put the image to a Pen Drive as USB Flash Drive. I don't recall I had to change anything other than selecting the image then.

About "Shrank C Drive". Windows 10 has this application to let you shrink the pre-existing partition formatted by NTFS:
https://scottiestech.info/2016/03/06/windows-linux-dual-boot-how-to-shrink-a-windows-disk-the-easy-w...

I used the application to shrink C Drive so that I can format the area freed, as EXT4, to install Linux (This is the step where it says "During the installation I created 2 partitions...").
