I happy to hear that. I know it is not an ideal solution but if it works it ain‘t stupid :)

Re: Linux on Ideapad D330

Hi again,

Two things:

On ubuntu, the default on-screen keyboard is not that great, barely usable. But there is an alternative that worked much better for me, you could download it with sudo apt install onboard.

Okay now some bad news, for some reason I started getting a blackscreen issue, another one. It was like this: everything is working perfectly, for days, then all the sudden I wake up this morning and I get a black screen after the boot messages. I'm not able to use the suspend-trick (mentioned in previous posts) either. With nomodeset it turns on, so I tried undoing all the changes I made the day before.

Any tips?

Re: Linux on Ideapad D330

I found out what was wrong myself, so the answer to my question:

I turned the device off with the setting of permanently disableing my screen rotation on. So I locked the device in the black screen state with my preset keyboard shortcut, then the black screen went away. I enabled screen rotation and after the reboot, there's no black screen anymore. Hope I could help someone!

I found a permanent solution for the diappearing sound device issue that should fix the the Problem for Gnome 3 based Desktops.

Run

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1

at the bottom of the file.

I also installed Zorin OS Lite 12.4. Althoug it is based on a very old Ubuntu version (16.04) it works a lot better than anything else. It boots straight to the desktop, no need for standby tricks, and the integrated cameras are recognised correctly and work with full resolution.

This is very strange and unexpected. Any ideas?

Has anyone figured out how to get the screen brightness working? I found this article showing how to get it going after using modeset to disable KMS but I am new to Linux and can't figure out how to apply it to our device. Did anyone else want to have a go?

Also previous posts indicated that Linux Kernel v5+ was going to fix the Intel video driver issue with the D330, has anyone heard any updates on this as I tried pre-release v5.0.0.13 but it made no difference?

Heads up everyone the Intel developer working on this has found the cause of the bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=108826#c163 . I applied the patch to the current 5.2 kernel and the screen now works. Note that I have the 1280x800 screen. However I'm still having issues with some boot-ups and suspend/resume failing to properly power up the screen. Please do try to apply the patch if you know how to.

Any chance of getting an outline on how to apply the patch for a newby? Can it be applied to any kernel or only to v5.2? I too have the 1280x800 version.

mwgarcia, does it also fix the brightness control as that's my biggest issue at the moment, it's just way too bright stuck on full brightness with nomodeset? Thanks. Dennis.

Yes it does fix the backlight control. You may have to configure some Xorg stuff, but that's par for the course.

I'm pretty sure you can apply this to any kernel version as long as the gemini lake support is there. Looking at the patch diff (https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/317041/) you just have to replace those lines in the specified source file if the patch file itself cannot be applied. i.e. replace

	I915_WRITE(MIPIO_TXESC_CLK_DIV1, txesc1_div & GLK_TX_ESC_CLK_DIV1_MASK);
	I915_WRITE(MIPIO_TXESC_CLK_DIV2, txesc2_div & GLK_TX_ESC_CLK_DIV2_MASK);

with

	I915_WRITE(MIPIO_TXESC_CLK_DIV1, (1 << (txesc1_div - 1)) & GLK_TX_ESC_CLK_DIV1_MASK);
	I915_WRITE(MIPIO_TXESC_CLK_DIV2, (1 << (txesc2_div - 1)) & GLK_TX_ESC_CLK_DIV2_MASK);

on vlv_dsi_pll.c

As for the process, I'm currently using Arch and am using https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel/Arch_Build_System . The process will differ depending on you distro, so you will have to follow them accordingly.

Re: Linux on Ideapad D330

Hi mwgarcia, thanks for the info! I managed to patch my kernel with the module fix and am now using the Intel i915 driver without modeset. It's great to have brightness control but there are still other issues with this driver on this device as follows;

1. I can't get the Option "Rotate" "CW" entry in my 20-gpudriver.conf xorg file to work so I have rotate the screen every time I boot into Fatdog64. With modeset it always worked.

2. I get random flickering lines on the edges of the screen after rotating manually from the display properties. Might be something to do with GTK+3 and Chrome browser though.

Any ideas about getting the rotation option to stick? Thanks.
