Neither Ethernet nor WiFi adapter working on Lenovo Thinkpad P14s under Ubuntu 2x.04

2021-11-24, 7:59 AM

Disclaimer: For maximum outreach, this question is a duplicate of https://askubuntu.com/questions/1377298/neither-ethernet-nor-wifi-adapter-working-on-lenovo-thinkpad-p14s-under-ubuntu-2

I have recently received my new computer, a Lenovo Thinkpad P14s notebook. According to the datasheet, it comes with a Realtek RTL8852AE (WiFi-6, 802.11ax, 2x2 Dual Band) WiFi adapter and a standard RJ45 ethernet port.

After installing Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, however, no WiFi was available at all. I did some research in the web and found suggestions to install Ubuntu 21.04 instead. However, this did not work either. Now, I got myself a LAN cable and tried to connect via Ethernet, but found this not to work either, although one of the ethernet adapters the system shows was said to be connecting (but never finished to connect).

A few outputs:

nmcli deviceDEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTIONenp2s0f0 ethernet unavailable --enp5s0 ethernet unavailable --lo loopback unmanaed --sudo lshw -class network*-network description: Ethernet interface product: RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller ... logical name: enp2s0f0 ...*-network UNCLAIMED description: Network controller product: Realtec Semiconductor Co., Ltd. ...*-network description: Ethernet interface product: RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller logical name: enp5s0

What else - besides going back to Windows - could I do to make that system work? I am not a Linux pro, so I am looking for the simplest solution possible.

Hi

Credit to Ubuntu forums ..........

Trouble-Shooting any Linux Wi-Fi problems should begin,
(IMO) with the usual updates.

sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade

OR
sudo zypper ref
sudo zypper dup

etc etc.

and reboot if necessary.

If the issues persist, it is recommended that you install pastebinit,
by running: sudo apt install (zypper in) pastebinit

Next

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && \
chmod +x wireless-info && \
./wireless-info

It will create the file "wireless-info.txt" at the location it is run from,
and depending on its size, an additional archive called
"wireless-
If you prefer, you can post the file directly to pastebin yourself.

Sensitive information like MAC addresses and WPA/WEP keys are masked automatically.

It works very nicely in OpenSuSE as well as Ubuntu.

I did as requested. The result can be found here: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/cDzCqMf5qd/

Note that in the meantime I tried Ubuntu 21.10 and also to update the Kernel to 5.15.0-051500-generic. I also did the updates you requested. None of which worked.

I have no re-installed a clean Ubuntu 20.04 LTS in order to avoid any mistakes on my side. The wireless-info result for that can now be found here: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/NbkcMyfhn2/

No, it did not. Actually, I thought pastebinning the information here would allow others to help me sort things out.

Anyway, I had a call with Lenovo Premier Support in the meantime. They told me that Lenovo Thinkpad P14s Gen2s are not Ubuntu-approved by Lenovo, and unfortunately not yet taken care of by the Ubuntu Driver community. The only solution is that supposedly there are unofficial drivers somewhere out there in the web, which I could try, as they have been reported to work before. Other option is to wait until those Gen 2 P14s's are also considered by the Ubuntu Driver community. :(

Hi

I hoped, as it was a TXT file you would have attached it to your post,

rather than a link to site that requires LOGIN credentials.

Hi

Try cd /lib/firmware && sudo mkdir rtw89 && sudo wget https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/rtw89/rtw8852a_fw.bin

Then reboot

AND/OR

 To get the kernel version of driver rtw89,

git clone github.com/github.com/lwfinger/rtw89.git -b v7
cd rtw89
make
sudo make sign_install

https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw89

I guess I have misunderstood then why I had to install pastebinit. :)

Anyway, please find the txt file attached to this post now.

OK

Interesting items.....

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8852]
    Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:4852]

Bus 005 Device 004: ID 0bda:4852 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Bluetooth Radio

Which suggests that the adapter is there, the BT part is recognised.

========

[[/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf]]
[connection]
wifi.powersave = 3

Therefore try ....

sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y git build-essential
git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw89.git
cd rtw89
make
sudo make install
sudo mkdir /usr/lib/firmware/rtw89
sudo cp  rtw8852a_fw.bin  /usr/lib/firmware/rtw89/
sudo modprobe rtw89pci

cd ~/rtw89
git pull
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe rtw89pci
