P70-20ER upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 experiences and issues

Yesterday I burned down the daily for 18.04 in anticipation of the April 26 releast of Ubuntu 18.04. Much to my surprise, things actually work well for the most part this time around (unlike the 17.10 upgrade).

Some issues I encountered:

1. When docked using the standard Think Docking station for the P70 ... the UI will not boot up during installation. Workaround: do the installation without the docking station. Subsequent updates to the OS resolve this (proprietary nvidia drivers actually work this go around).

I am; however, getting a weird error ... and I'm not sure if anyone else is:

$ sudo dmesg

Overall though ... things seem to work out alright, LAN (through docking station) works good, cellular chip works well, WiFi works great. keyboard dimming and other function-related keys work fine as well.

Not seeing any way to use the color calibration sensor though, nor fingerprint usage. Now working on getting Secure-Boot fully enabled ... the MOK Manager is a bit confusing.

Re: P70-20ER upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 experiences and issues

This might be useful to anyone who has the 4k Monitor and has things docked up to LoDPI monitors:

How this works:

1. set the global scaling level to 2x what it normally would be (this makes the HiDPI screen look like a 1920x1080 .. but with crisp text).

2. for each monitor that we want to display at 1x magnification ... set the virtual size to be 2x the actual resolution of the display in question.

3. Frame buffer calculation = 3840x2160 + (2560x1440 * 2) + (1920x1080 *2). Calculate Offsets from there (I have laptop on far-left on my desk, 27" next to that, and a 21" to the right of that.

4. Configure panning so each monitor does its thing there as far as mouse positioning goes and whatnot.
