T490 high battery drain during sleep in ubuntu

2019-11-20, 20:14 PM

Ive been running ubuntu for some weeks now on my Lenovo t490 (it doesn't have the mx250 graphics, it just has the plain intel HD graphics).

Sleep works, the computer goes down sleeping and the led blinks however the battery drain is high during sleep.

Over a weekend from 100% to 0%.

my old Lenovo X250 doesn't have this problem.

I found a post about the same problem on a X1 gen 7 and the X1 has an option to set "Sleep State" to "Linux" in the bios, the T490 however doesn't have that option.

(X1 gen 7 post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Ubuntu/thinkpad-x1-7th-generation-ubuntu-19-04-linux-learnings/td-p/4494342 ).

Anyone else with the same problem?
Any chance we can have the "Sleep State" option in a BIOS update?

Hello and welcome,

Are you sure that the T490 is a "modern standby" machine?  I can't seem to find that info, but my X390Y for instance  is not.

What does "dmesg | grep ACPI | grep supports" return? S3 would indicate a classic sleep mode, not modern standby.

There may be other things that are eating battery.  What about "always ON USB" in BIOS?

Ahh, didn't know about "modern sleep".

So it appears it supports S3, and it also indicate going into S3 when sleeping.

@clyde:~$ dmesg |grep ACPI | grep support
[ 0.585325] ACPI: (supports S0 S3 S4 S5)

@clyde:~$ dmesg |grep ACPI | grep "enter system sleep"

[ 203.494334] ACPI: Preparing to enter system sleep state S3

I haven't got USB always on enabled (although I have that on my old x250, where it doesn't give me a problem).

I put the T490 to sleep last evening at 20%, this morning 7 hours later it was down to 4%.

So anyone else with the same problem?

What is normal power drain during sleep?

Ill put it to sleep now at 95% battery will check again in ~12 hours.

I have tested running different kernels.

4.20.17

5.3.0

5.3.12

But it doesn't make a difference.

Running 4.20 right now, waking up at 85% after ~10 hours. so 95% to 85% is that reasonable?

my x250 is no where nere these figures.
