ThinkPad T series in Europe

2020-12-03, 20:51 PM

Hi,

I want to buy from Europe a ThinkPad T series with Ubuntu installed.

I've searched in some of the main European stores (Germany, Italy, UK) and it seems there's no option to choose Linux as the OS.

Do you know if it's going to be available in the EU or the UK at some point?

Thank you very much.

When I got a sales representative on the line a few months ago, they said they would become available this year. But three weeks ago, they said 'around 2021'. When I asked if that means that it could also be 2022, they switched to another subject.

For now, it is an US-only thing. And even there the delivery-time is > 5 weeks for all systems. So basically it's vaporware.

Lenovo is completely silent on the subject. Is the project cancelled?

Thank you for your reply.

Maybe there are resellers in the US or China available to ship internationally?

Hi all,

Project definitely isn't cancelled :)

We are still working on this - we tried to get three of the platforms up in Europe a little while ago and hit a problem with the internal rules for the systems. I can't go into all the details (and to be honest they are mind numbingly boring) but those incorrect rules are being fixed - there's a whole process and chain of paperwork that goes with it that drives me insane... but it is in progress. I'm hoping I can get them up by the end of the year, but it's a busy time of year for all the product teams so I'm not making any promises.

As a note - I've been told that everything is correct for next years platforms, which admittedly doesn't help much right now....but I figure it's all part of the learning curve.

I do have another 9 platforms supposed to go up in the US soon as well (and worldwide after that...). They get held back as the web team were swamped with Black Friday....so as that winds down I'm hoping they are able to get Linux rolling again.

Mark

Hi Mark, Thanks for the update. Really appreciated. I could see that there was some drawback, but couldn't figure out what, why and for how long.

Hi Mark, thanks for the update.

I hope to see the products available in our market area in the first half of 2021.

Thanks for all the hard work. ThinkPad are incomparably the best laptop on Earth, and Linux is incomparably the best OS available!
