ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 firmware update on Linux

2019-11-04, 18:33 PM

I am running Ubuntu 19.10 on a recently-purchased X1 Extreme gen 2. The installed BIOS version is 1.26.

I looked in the Drivers & Software page and I see that 1.27 was released on 29 October. However, running `fwupdmgr --get-updates` says "No upgrades for 20QVCTO1WW System Firmware, current is 0.1.26: 0.1.23=older, 0.1.23=older". How long does it usually take for firmware updates to be available via fwupdmgr? Should I manually update?

I downloaded the BIOS Update Utility for Linux and the README. The directions in the README are clear, but nowhere do I see the 20QVCTO1WW ID mentioned above and want to make sure that I have the correct files. The BIOS Update Utility download is called `n2oul06w.zip` and contains 3 CAB files: N2OET40P.cab, N2OET40W.cab and N2OHT32W.cab. Is this the right file? Which one should I apply?

Thanks in advance,

-Mario.

Hi mcamou!

Thanks for posting in the Community,

The BIOS Update listed in the link is the version 1.27 (N2OET40W) which is the compatible one for X1 Extreme Gen 2 (20QV) running the following OS,

Debian 9

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (64-bit)

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 (64-bit)

Ubuntu 16

Regards,

Thank you very much Hector.

How long is the usual delay between the updates appearing in the support page, and them appearing in fwupdmgr?

Best regards,

-Mario.

Hello again,

In https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-extreme-gen-2/20qv/20qvcto1ww/r90wad97/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI I see that 1.28 has been available since December 17. However:

$ sudo fwupdmgr refresh
Fetching metadata https://cdn.fwupd.org/downloads/firmware.xml.gz
Downloading… [***************************************]
Fetching signature https://cdn.fwupd.org/downloads/firmware.xml.gz.asc

$ sudo fwupdmgr get-updates
No upgrades for 20QVCTO1WW System Firmware, current is 0.1.27: 0.1.27=same, 0.1.27=same, 0.1.23=older, 0.1.23=older
No upgrades for UEFI Device Firmware, current is 0.1.19: 0.1.19=same

Any ideas?
