Re: ThinkPad X1 Yoga: LTE Sierra EM7455 on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

2016-08-31, 8:50 AM
Bjørn, I just tried to get the LTE modem in my X1 Yoga working on Opensuse Tumbleweed. The kernel is 4.7.1-1-default, the packages you mention have the required revision. Still, the modem is not recognized at all by the network manager. Only in the classical Network settings panel of YAST (the Suse configuration tool) the modem is shown, but not configurable while the network manager is in charge. Any hints to debug that?

thanks a lot

Re: ThinkPad X1 Yoga: LTE Sierra EM7455 on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

first check if it is a networkmanager problem by e.g running the ModemManager command line tool:

mmcli -L

If that shows a modem, then I'm not sure how to proceed.  Maybe restarting networkmanager and/or modemmanger resolves it. Or run

mmcli -m X

with the X replaced by the modem index from the first command.  This will show all the MM status.  Note that it includes your IMEI number etc before posting any of the output.

But for the more likely scenario that this is a ModemManager or driver problem:

Verify that the modem is there and the driver was loaded:

 dmesg|grep mbim

Restart ModemManager with debugging enabled to see if there are any obvious errors:

systemctl stop ModemManager

/usr/sbin/ModemManager --debug

You need to run most of these commands as root of course, either by starting a root shell or using sudo or similar

Re: ThinkPad X1 Yoga: LTE Sierra EM7455 on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

Wow, I did not expect such a quick and detailed reply. Thanks a great bunch!

mmcli -L gives
'couldn't find the ModemManager in the bus'
cdc_mbim shows in dmesg and renamed my modem to wwp0s20f0u2i12 (**bleep**?) from wwan0 (which was the name I expected...)

Now I am reading through the debug output of ModemManager.

thanks!

Hmm, after starting the ModemManager in Debug mode, mmcli -L gives the same error.

Seemingly important info from the debug output:

OK, I guess the last line is the important one. He recognizes the modem and finds the right driver, but when firing the driver up he crashes.

Any instant idea? I'll consult Dr. Google.

Re: ThinkPad X1 Yoga: LTE Sierra EM7455 on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

2016-08-31, 9:39 AM

EDIT: no, you're right.  If ModemManager crashes with that message, then that's the problem.  Sorry, didn't notice that you said it crashed.  That will explain all problems.

The  mm_gdbus_modem_voice_skeleton_get_type symbol is supposed to be in the libmm-glib library.  I suspect you might be using an older version of that with a new ModemManager binary.  Make sure you update both at the same time,  Packaging dependencies should do this automatically, but if you build your own then there might be problems.  Or there could be packaging bugs of course.

To check for the incompatibility, run this to see where your libmm library is:

$ ldd /usr/sbin/ModemManager |grep libmm
libmm-glib.so.0 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmm-glib.so.0 (0x00007ff517b59000)

and then, replacing my example with the proper location:

$ nm -D /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmm-glib.so.0|grep mm_gdbus_modem_voice_skeleton
0000000000070b20 T mm_gdbus_modem_voice_skeleton_get_type
0000000000071b30 T mm_gdbus_modem_voice_skeleton_new

If you don't see those symbols, then you need to figure out how to update libmm to the version built along with the ModemManager binary

Yeah, you are my hero!
I had to update some packages, and somehow the package manager did not know or resolve the correct dependencies.
I updated libmm-glib0 and now the card is there. In network manager.

cool! Thanks a lot!

Re: ThinkPad X1 Yoga: LTE Sierra EM7455 on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

Hi Bjørn, guess what, the EM7455 won't show up in mmcli -L here, too - although I:

 * built a 4.8 kernel here: https://build.opensuse.org/project/monitor/home:frispete:Kernel-current

 * built libqmi-1.16.0, libmbim-1.14.0 and ModemManager-1.6.0: same repo

Device shows up as:

T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1

Driver is loaded:

[ 6.477450] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_mbim

ModemManager fails:

Re: ThinkPad X1 Yoga: LTE Sierra EM7455 on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

Hi Bjørn, guess what, the EM7455 is unavailable here in a Lenovo X1 Carbon Type FB20, using openSUSE 42.1, although:

The cdc_mbim module gets loaded:

~# dmesg|grep mbim

[ 6.377428] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_mbim

but mmcli can't find a modem:

~# mmcli -L

No modems were found

The ModemManager status:

Not really, except for the obvious:  Looks like the mbim-proxy is failing for some reason.  But I have no idea why.  Maybe try the experts on the modemmanager-devel list? See https://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/modemmanager-devel

how you managed to install ubuntu on it? I wasn't even able to boot into ubuntu using test ubuntu without installing

I found http://askubuntu.com/questions/753955/cannot-boot-liveusb-with-x1-yoga but don't know where to write the intel_pstate=disable when pressing e during boot, is it at the middle of the line that starts with linux ?
