Thinkpad E14: Ubuntu 20.04 won't boot

2021-04-20, 13:53 PM

Hello,

maybe someone here can help me.

I have a Thinkpad E14 with AMD graphics card. It came with WIndows 10 preinstalled, so I installed Ubuntu 20.04 and set up a dual boot.

Most of the time, it would not boot into Ubuntu and it would stop at a black screen with blinking cursor.

Sometimes however it worked. I could not recognize a pattern.

I tried to update the kernel. And I updated and upgraded the system. I disabled secure boot. I also did some other stuff I don't remember. It would work for some time, but then again it didn't. I also tried reinstalling it and got the same problem.

After some time I also got problems with the sound. There was just no sound and only a 'Dummy output' was recognized. I fixed that, so I could choose the right output, but there was still no sound. After some updates I rebooted and my computer made the most terrible mechanical high pitched rattling sound! I had to turn it right off again.

The next time I turned it on it made another sound which was not as bad.

Then I reinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 and deleted the whole disk and its partitions. So now I don't have Windows anymore, but there is still the same problem with the blinking cursor on boot. So it wasn't Windows fault, as I hoped. The sound is working again, but it also did last time in the beginning. It seems that I am able to boot into Ubuntu after booting into recovery mode and executing the grub repair option. I am not sure if that is a fix...

My question is: May there be a problem with my hardware? Should I write a bug report to Ubuntu? Has anyone here had the same problem??

Thank you for reading this!

Greetings

Hello,

Regarding hardware diagnostics, I recently discovered these:   https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht506581-lenovo-diagnostic-solutions-downloads

You will need to use a friends Windows 10 computer to burn the bootable USB though.   I made the UEFI version but the Linux one may be independent of the main installed OS, I haven't tried it.

For your bugs, are you using UEFI bios mode?  (Some AMD chip bios do not have legacy option any more, I hope none of them do.)   Have you installed a driver named amd-gpu?

Good Luck,
Usedtoberich

PS> for testing sometimes I try the live usb for fedora, that seems to work out of the box for a large number of Lenovo systems.  Just click on the live desktop, don't select install after booting it up.

Hello, thanks for your answer!

I don't have a friend with Windows 10, but I will try to create a bootable USB for the diagnostics on Linux.

I am using UEFI mode. It's hard for me to find out which driver I am using. When running 'lshw -c video', it tells me I have two GPUs, one named 'UHD Graphics' (Intel) and another one 'Lexa' (AMD). Using lspci I get:

me@my-computer:~$ lspci -nnk |grep -i vga -A3
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics [8086:9b41] (rev 02)
    Subsystem: Lenovo UHD Graphics [17aa:507a]
    Kernel modules: i915
00:04.0 Signal processing controller [1180]: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v5/E3-1500 v5/6th Gen Core Processor Thermal Subsystem [8086:1903] (rev 0c)

me@my-computer:~$ lspci -nnk |grep -i amd -A3
03:00.0 Display controller [0380]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Lexa [Radeon 540X/550X/630 / RX 640 / E9171 MCM] [1002:6987] (rev c0)
    Subsystem: Lenovo Lexa [Radeon 540X/550X/630 / RX 640 / E9171 MCM] [17aa:507a]
    Kernel modules: amdgpu
04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [10ec:8168] (rev 10)
Subsystem: Lenovo RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [17aa:5079]
    Kernel driver in use: r8169

Hello,

It looks like you have two GPU's installed.   For troubleshooting enter BIOS and make one of them active and the other one inert.  See if system performance improves.  Then try the other way.

Other posters needed!  I don't know much more about AMD equipment and gpu cards.

Thanks for your help. I couldn't solve the problem with Ubuntu, so I now tried Manjaro and it seems to work.

Greetings!
