Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 6 overheats

2021-06-21, 17:05 PM

Hello,

I bought and started using the X1 Yoga 4 days ago and it's been consistently overheating to 91 C when running heavier processes like code, package install, builds, 2D games, etc.  They're often run choppily too. It sounds similar to the issue here but without crashes. Is this intended behaviour? My Thinkpad T480 never breaks 70 degrees on the same processes while running them faster+smoother. Should I send in the Yoga for a swap?

This is Ubuntu 20.04

If you monitor the cpu heat level how long does it stay above 90C.  when I test on mine with the latest BIOS and EC, not general available yet as still in testing phase, it goes to about 96C for less than a minute then drop the frequency down to 2.4GHZ and the Temp then drops to in the upper 60sC to low 70sC range.  There is a power tables fix in the next EC 1.26 soon to be released as it need 1.41 BIOS to go with it.  The latest released is 1.40 and 1.25 for BIOS and EC

Yeah, my laptop exhibits the same behavior. It doesn't seem sustainable or practical to run at 96 C for such extended amounts of time. Do you know why a game like Don't Starve could be running very choppily on the X1 Yoga Gen 6, while it runs flawlessly on my T480? Is this a consequence of running such a powerful CPU? Does the X1 Nano or the X1 Yoga Gen 5 run at such high temperatures too?

try adding i915.enable_dc=2 to the bootargs to see if that cures the choppiness
