X1 Carbon 7th Generation running hot and draining battery

Running Ubuntu 18.04.3, machine tends to run quite hot (especially when using external monitor) with core temps ranging up to 85C at times (no CPU throttling, afaik), and while my applications use a lot of memory I apparently haven't maxed it out. Battery life is predictably not great.

I've heard about undervolting but don't quite understand what's involved. Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks...

Re: X1 Carbon 7th Generation running hot and draining battery

I can't give you a technical explanation, but following the advice from another thread and installing TLP vastly improved things for me (also 7th gen on Ubuntu 18.04.3):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw -y

For ThinkPads:
sudo apt-get install tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-dkms -y

Reboot and it will do its thing automatically. My understanding is that improves over time, but I noticed immediate improvments.

Thanks for this -- I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Re: X1 Carbon 7th Generation running hot and draining battery

This seems to have done the trick -- machine is running cooler (~50C cores temp).

Thanks!
