X1 Carbon 7th wifi not detected after Ubuntu 19.10 upgrade

2020-02-19, 6:33 AM

Hi,

Yesterday there were 25 updates to Ubuntu 19.10 After a reboot there's no WiFi option in the menu and the logs it says that iwlwifi can not be loaded. It seems like something broke the ability to load the driver. I have no idea how to fix this. Anyone else seen this happen or is it only me?

Linux 18.04 after apt upgrade lost wi-fi. This got it up and working:

#FIX WiFi after apt upgrade

sudo apt update

sudo apt install git build-essential

git clone https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/iwlwifi/backport-iwlwifi.git

cd backport-iwlwifi/

make defconfig-iwlwifi-public

sed -i 's/CPTCFG_IWLMVM_VENDOR_CMDS=y/# CPTCFG_IWLMVM_VENDOR_CMDS is not set/' .config

make -j4

sudo make install

sudo modprobe iwlwifi

Not sure if it's going to work for you.

I had the same issue, and I can confirm that compiling the backported iwlwifi module solved the issue. One thing: after that last step, be sure to run:

sudo update-initramfs -u

So that on the next reboot the new driver will be loaded.

Thanks! This solved the issue for me as well (in ubuntu 18.04).

The only other thing is that I had to sign the drivers due to secure boot. This link has a step by step guide on how to do it.
