X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

I am considering buying an X1C gen 6.

The model that is available in my region is: 20KH007JIV

According to https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_6th_Gen?ch=20kh007

It has a Fibocom L850-GL.

Does it work with ubuntu 18.04 ? I mean does it work reliably after editing some files here and there or it's a mess ? (I am ok to edit some configs if required).

Should I check anything before purchasing ? (I am plannig to only have Ubuntu 18.04 on it for development).

I know there seems to be some problem with sleep mode but there are acceptable workarounds.

Thank you in advance !

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

No, it will not work with linux at this time.

Fibocom L850 default interface is pcie. USB interface will not on unless pcie is off during boot. But thinkpad x1 m.2 has both pcie and usb.  So linux will always show L850 as a pcie device, not USB device.

However, L850 or Intel only supply L850 usb linux driver. No pcie driver. At this time it will not work with linux.

Possible solutions are:

1) Turn off pcie channel 4 during boot

2) Mask pice pins with Kapton tape

But those totally depends on L850 with thinkpad is not a custom made modem and has both USB and pcie.

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

Thanks for shedding some light on this!

I have the same question for the WWAN offered on the T480s, namely:

  • Fibocom Cat6 L850-EB 4G LTE
  • Fibocom Cat9 L850-GL 4G LTE

Questions:

  • Is the Cat6 L850-EB any different compared to the Cat9 L850-GL regarding Linux support?
  • You mention "Possible solutions", does this mean you can not confirm 100% that one of these solutions will work?
  • Could you elaborate on how to implement "Turn off pcie channel 4 during boot"?

Thanks for any answer.

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

Is it possible to replace that card with something that works under Linux ? Is it technically complex if possible ?

P.S:

Suspend has problems.

WWAN not suported at all.

I am starting to wonder why this system is listed as "supported" by linux. Need to inform ubuntu.

https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201712-26045/

I have made a request to alter Ubuntu certification to represent the current problems with 6th gen and to properly inform users that the system is not fully supported.

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

I just got my x1y3 with L850-LG, Cat9 version and I am working on disabling pcie channel 4 during boot. I think masking pcie pin out might not work well because Lenovo only supplies Fibocom with pcie Windows driver -- So if it works with Linux, may stop working under Windows.

Cat9 version and Cat6 version uses same Intel xmm7360 chip but antenna circuit (MIMO) is different. Actually newer version thinkpad X1 or your T has very complicated antenna design. One side is (the world first on laptop?) tunable antenna.

May not be able to switch to Qualcomm 74xx. Current newer models are all single FRU models, meaning world wide one FRU on the white list-- Fibocom L850-GL. But this is just my guess because Lenovo still have not published any BOM.

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

There are quite a few reports about Fibocom not working as expected in either Windows, Mac or Linux systems... Not just Lenovo / IBM either.

My advice - do not be an early adopter of Fibocom based systems, stick with what works for now.

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

I've applied the sister update on my ThinkPad T480s (version 1.26). No real changes to how Linux does (not) see the card that I can notice.
