[Y740] Any Users Have Setup Dual Boot Ubunutu with NVIDIA Driver Installed?

2019-10-09, 8:19 AM

Any Y740 user managed to setup dual boot Ubuntu with NVIDIA driver installed? Would you mind sharing with me how you make this works?

I am trying to set up dual boot Ubuntu 16.04 in my Y740, but many issues came along.

To share with you more about my situation, I could install Ubuntu on fresh but many other issues came along in my Ubuntu side (e.g. brightness adjustment not working, failure to wake up after suspend, black screen / login loop after nvidia installation). I have made many attempts to settle these issues but most of the solutions suggested online did not serve me well so far.

[Update 12/10/2019]

I replaced Ubuntu 16.04 with Ubuntu 18.04. Some issues got settled (e.g. black screen crash / inifinite login loop after nvidia driver installation), but many major issues still exist (e.g. screen flickering in both nouveau / proprietary nvidia driver, failure to wake up after suspend, and failure to adjust screen brightness)

Do any Y740 users encountered similar issues?

[Update 12/10/2019]

After stucking in post-login page several times, I tried to install KDE desktop in tty mode. After reboot, I could finally get into desktop. NVIDIA settings work fine. My RTX 2070 max Q can be detected with "nvidia-smi". However, I got into screen flickering issue again. The screen flickering issue this time is not as serious as the one I encountered in GNOME.

For those Y740 user looking for a dual boot solution, you can also take reference here:

A Y740 user installed kubuntu 19.04 successfully with a few configurations tweak. My decision to install KDE desktop is also driven by this.

[Update 19/10/2019]

After a few days of experience in my relatively stable Ubuntu build (for Y740), I found two scenarios when screen flickering occurs.

1. When training deep learning model and charging (CPU intensive + GPU intensive)

2. Start charging at power level < 90%

I am currently using NVIDIA driver 435. I noticed software update just suggested me to update to NVIDIA driver 440. I will try if the update could settle these issue

Hey. I'm planning to buy Y740 (17" 2060) and I don't really use an OS other than the Linux so it is really important for me that it has no annoying problems on Linux. I want to ask you : If you can change adjust the screen brightness without any problem ? Are the laptop fans work without any problem ? Is the Linux (doesn't matter the distro) stable, usable in daily life ? Thanks for this topic!
