2nd hard drive in a W510

I have a new W510 on the way. I thought I read that it has a 2nd hard drive bay so I ordered a 160 GB SSD drive. I want to make the SSD drive primary and the 500 GB drive that comes with the machine secondary for storage. Sales told me there's a second hard drive bay in the machine and doesn't require any sort of adapter.

But the more I read, it looks like the only way to add a 2nd HDD is via a SlimBay adapter (I'd have to remove the DVD drive). Is this the case? If so, I'm going to put the 2nd hard drive option on hold because I really need the extra storage and can't justify the price of a 500 GB SSD drive.

You'll need a ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (43N3412) for the 2nd hard drive.

Thank you, I saw that part. So I will need to use the optical drive bay for a 2nd HDD.

You would need to buy the UltraBay thing. Swap the primay 500G with the SSD. Recover Windows onto the SSD. Install the 500G as secondary with the UltraBay tray. Then wipe the 500G out to be used as storage.

I have a Crucial RealSSD 256GB as primary and a 1TB HDD as secondary. It's been working great!

Re: 2nd hard drive in a W510

But the slimbay uses the bay that the DVD drive is in, correct? So when I'm using the 2nd HDD, the DVD drive will be out of the machine?

@coppertrail, correct you will need to take the DVD drive out and put the slimbay in.

Got it, thank you all for your replies, really looking forward to this system. Had a T61P at my last job, liked it so much decided to go Lenovo for my personal laptop.
