Re: Fan stays on after shut down

Hi,

After shutting down my W540, (most of the time) the power button will blink and the fan will run for aprox 20 sec to 1 minute before the fan shuts down and the power button stops blinking. If I close the computer-lid before the power button goes dark, it will continue to run the fan, blowing hot air constantly. It has happend that i arrive home after work and found my computer almost melting in my computer case. This is the case for most of our Lenovo laptops that i have tested it with, not only W540. It's inrellevant if im in docking or not.

Re: Fan stays on after shut down

This is a "feature" of windows 8. By default, the shut down button actually closes all of your programs and then hibernates the core OS so that it starts up faster. The power button flashing is what is being transferred from RAM to your disk (I'll assume HDD because it is taking 20+ seconds).

To fix it, open an elevated command prompt (run as administrator) and type the following:

powercfg -h off

This will disable hibernation in Windows (it's really not needed - the W540 battery lasts forever in sleep, and it boots very quickly if you want to do a full shutdown), thus killing off fast startup.

W540: i7-4700mq, K2100m, 16 GB RAM, 500 GB Samsung 840 EVO
T510: i7-620m, NVS 3100m, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB Samsung 840 EVO

Re: Fan stays on after shut down

Thanks a lot! Seems to work :) I actually have the "top" config of W540 with 32 GB RAM. I guess that extra RAM might extend the time then.
