New W510 - High Pitched Whine/Sqeal Using Battery

2010-03-29, 15:44 PM

I'm evaluating my first Lenovo ever for my company.  I've noticed that when this W510 runs on battery it has an annoying whine that seems to come from the CPU, especially when it is idle.  Is this normal?  Anything I can do to get rid of it?

Thanks!

Yeah, I get the same thing.  I heard a lot of people saying they have the same noise from the cpu when on battery.  I hear it's the sound of the voltage regulators that adjust the speed of the CPU.  You can stop it by turning off the adaptive CPU power, but then you lose the power savings.  I heard some people sent their cpu back for a replacement, but I haven't heard whether it successfully fixed the issue.

I called tech support, they're sending me a replacement processor,  its on back order but I should have it in about a week.  I'll report back if it fixes my issue or not.

Thanks!

Try disabling the power-saving feature of the CPU in the BIOS, and see if it still does that. I know that it may not be a solution for the high pitch sound, but it should at least be able to make the noise go away so you can hear yourself think. ;)

I turned off CPU deep sleep in Power Manager and that helped but hurt my battery life.  I don't run it often in battery, but man does it get annoying when I do.

I have been on the phone with Lenovo for two days about this. And NO ONE from Tech support was evening willing to troubleshoot this. I got the Standard  - "You need to send it in"..

There was no troubleshooting at all. Insane. Thanks so much for posting the fix. I disabled the Deep Sleep and have not heard the noise since. For me the problem was occuring on battery and in the docking station.

I have been on hold for 25min while the Tech is "researching" I already told them about the forum complaints about this very issue, but that does not seem to compute. I will let them know.

Wow, I feel pretty lucky that I got a tech rep that didn't want to be bothered.  I just told him I am an IT Manager and that seemed to make it ok. *shrug*

TIcket for this case was opened on 3/31/2010 - Part arrived last week 4/30 - that right. 1 month later. Tech came today and replaced the motherboard. Issue still exists.

I told Lenovo is was most likely the CPU or power issue. Since the issue goes away when you disabled CPU deeper sleep.

ROCK ON

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is an issue that is unlikely to be resolved.  Either you will have a drain on the battery, or you will hear the squeal noise.  Also, if you run the w510 off of a 90w power supply, you will also hear a lot of the same kind of noise.

Some level of this behavior exists in all systems -- it does seem to be particularly bad on this model though, and I doubt you will ever see a fix.

You can read up more on the issue here:  http://u.nu/5mk59

I don't hear any such noise (other than the fan) reagrdless of battery or adapter :)

So there must be a fix for it.
