W510 Randomly Turns Off

2014-04-25, 19:14 PM

My W510 three or four times now has suddenly switched off - I hear a clicking (possibly the disk drive turning itself off) and a fraction of a second later it's powered off, no BSOD or any other warning.

This was happening before my disk started giving errors, so I replaced the disk but it's still happening so I doubt it's the disk that's causing it.

I have the same problem that just started with a W500.

1) is the bottom feel like a furnace?

2) do all bezel lights go out? For mine, everything goes dark and will computer will not restart or show any lights unless I unplug the battery AND the AC Adapter. Only then when I plug one in do I get a power led on the bezel and can start the laptop again.

3) after several cycles, the on time has gotten shorter and shorter on mine, even if I leave off overnight.

Any similarities?

Definitely check for overheating using something like HWMonitor.

It hasn't happened recently, I will revisit the post when it does.  Thanks for the suggestions.

I have had the same issue with my W510 sporadically. The temperature has normally not been an issue, and I have torture tested the memory, CPU and hard drive a number of times with a burn-in program to try to force the issue, but the W510 hums along marvelously. So, I am not sure what causes it when it happens. It just unceremoniously turns off as if the power button had been held down. Go figure.....

Does the issue seem to happen with movement of the laptop?

Mine neither. There is no surge of fan activity or anything, just instant off. I have yet to build a set of correlates, nor have I been able to create the event myself. It doesn't happen often enough to turn me off (no pun intended), it's just puzzling.
